I here from time to time about stars moving from one city to the other though recently it seems like every movie is filmed in the UK. To answer the question considers:

celebrity residence

Number of films shot/ produced in either city

number of active animation studios and quality of films

TV shows

Scrip writing taking place in City

Capital (were all the money is being moved from)

props and other set manufacturers

Special effect studios (number and quality of them)

Best place for Indie movie filming

ps. I meant film

Brazil is the SOCCOR capital of the world. New York has been falling fast off the world stage, and London is taking the majority of film production from LA

India makes more films per year and has many millions more movie admissions per year than any other country, although it's still essentially a domestic industry (yes, there are some Bollywood fans outside of India, but it's a bit niche). Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata are just as significant as film capitals as New York would be. Vancouver and Toronto see a lot of film production from U.S. studios.

LA is still tops for producing films seen by huge domestic and international audiences. London is #2, also for television.

Seriously? The answer is obviously LA.

And London? LOL. There's a film industry there, but no way is it remotely comparable to Hollywood.

In terms of film industry LA>NYC>LDN. And huge gaps between LA and NYC, and even bigger gaps between NYC and London.

Looks like you may be right about this.

London is stealing a win over Hollywood - Telegraph Online

Quote:
London has replaced Hollywood as the world's filmmaking hub because of lucrative tax incentives that make one of the most expensive cities in the world one of the cheapest in which to shoot films.

The top movie producing countries (by # of productions) are:
1. India
2. Nigeria
3. United States
4. Japan
5. China
6. France
7. Germany
8. Spain
9. Italy
10. South Korea
11. UK
* Edited to add: 2009 figures.

Top 10 box offices by country:
1. North America (U.S. and Canadian domestic box office receipts are combined when reported in media)
2. China
3. Japan
4. France and UK (a tie apparently)
5. India
6. Germany
7. Russia
8. Italy
9. Spain
10. Brazil

I was way off on London's ranking, by box office and production numbers. New York may be gaining productions at Hollywood's loss, due to production leaving L.A... that seems to be a trend in recent years.
