Washington DC is well known, however it is no where near as well known as NYC.

NYC is more iconic and often depicted in countless movies made worldwide. There's even whole sets built on city blocks in other cities to look like NYC in films. The statue of liberty is also arguably more recognizable than say the washington monument or capital building

Washington is well known. The problem is many people do not know it's called D.C.

Obviously NYC. DC is not super well-known, at least not on the level of NYC.

Just because a place is a national capitol doesn't mean it's particularly well known. Ottawa, Bonn, Canberra, Brasilia, The Hague, Bern, don't exactly have worldwide renown.

Bonn is not the capital of Germany anymore. The Hague is not the capital of the Netherlands.
