It's funny because Vancouver has always seemed to be like a famous city... Toronto not so much.
Vancouver may have gotten some international attention because of city rankings that pop up, also the Olympics might have helped.
However before 1986 when we had the World's Fair, Vancouver wasn't known very well at all. I constantly had to explain where it was etc. It still happens today, but a lot less.
In Latin America, at least according to my wife, Montreal seems to come up first. I'm from Germany, and I think Montreal is at least as well-known in that part of Europe as Toronto.
Toronto is fairly well known, but I feel there's confusion about exactly what or where it is. Everyone knows it's a big, prosperous North American city, but I'm not sure most people get that's it's Canada's hegemonic city, even though it truly is.
Agree Montreal will be better known in different parts of the world, than Toronto. Italy is a place I seem to remember hearing Toronto when I mentioned Canada.
Vancouver is very famous in Asia, probably more so than Toronto, at least in the Chinese speaking world.
Vancouver being on the Pacific Rim it kind of makes sense, but Toronto has a large Chinese population as well. Percentage wise, not as much as Vancouver.
Because people in towns perceive that everything that comes from big cities is bad, people are rude and they come with their car to run over meadows, bring nasty dogs and kids..and worst of all..domingueros...sunday drivers.
I like NYC and love visiting. Have been there several times and never found anything to dislike. I've not heard a French person criticize Paris, nor an Italian criticize Rome or any other native person of a country bad-mouth the capital.

I think it's always been well known on the US west coast for obvious reasons. Also, there is a city with the same name in Washington.

So why do you think Vancouver is better known?
I think you answered this yourself; it's because it's a Pacific Rim city with a large Asian (Chinese in particular) population.

I just feel like I hear more Vancouver than Toronto growing up.

Vancouver's port is a very busy one, it's the economic link that we have to the Pacific Rim, not so much Toronto. Also, it's within the Seattle/Pacific northwest region, so there's that too. Toronto's a longgg way from the west coast. Maybe it's easy to forget that in Toronto?
