NYC and most of the East Coasts cities in the US are walkable, whilst Chicago has a decent public transport system and is walkable as are cities on the west coast such as San Francisco and Portland.

US cities with the smallest pre WW2 built areas: Phoenix, Houston, etc. Older US cities have a pre WW2 area that is walkable and a newer area that is car centric.

On the other hand, those cities have been rebuilding their urban cores with modern, post WWII development. There are probably cities out there in the world that have even less walkability than the US Sunbelt, but lack the prosperity to invest in their urban cores.

Why is everyone only talking about American cities? Do you realize this is throughout the whole world? U.S. is luxurious when it comes to walkabilty in our cities. There are cities in Asia that are far far far worse. What about Moscow? Drivers there are terrible and Moscow roads tend to be very very wide so crossing the street can be extremely dangerous when many parts of the city don't even have crosswalks. At least every city in America has them because of regulations.

Because they are thinking only about cities in portions of the Sunbelt (which are building up their urban cores as we speak, anyways), while forgetting places like NYC and Chicago.
