I first learned Spanish with Spanish lexicon so when in Montevideo I asked for a group of old ladies where I would take buses (coger autobuses) but ‘’coger’’ in South American Spanish means have sex. So they understood more or less like if I want **** in buses and looked for me terrified.

When I first started learning Spanish I learned with Colombian words. Was dating a Colombia and had Colombian friends. Gozar can be used to say just messing around.

I met a Peruvian girl and used gozar with her and in peru it has a different meaning ...lol

According to the RAE dictionary, it has that meaning in the following countries/regions: Central America, Argentina, Bolivia, Mexico, Paraguay, Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Venezuela.

in other countries including mine (Colombia) it doesn't have a sexual connotation at all. We use "coger" for everything. Coger un taxi: to get a cab; cogerse de la mano: held hands, coger por ahí: to take that way, etc.

"Coger" means sex for Mexicans too. Ok, I don't feel so bad about my camisinha incident anymore.

I had forgotten that in Spain I had called a lady's baby "chulo." She got very upset and told me that was inappropriate. For me chulo means cute, for them it means pimp. Lol I called her baby a pimp!

I don't have that amusing of an experience personally, but a Spanish teacher of mine in high school did. She was on a tour through Mexico (I believe) and it was a hot day. While on the bus, she fanned herself and exclaimed "Estoy caliente!" which means "I am hot" for....sex All the men were titillated by it, apparently. Haha.

You'd think a Spanish teacher would know that, lol

Coger is sometimes the equivalent of the "f" word. It is not a word you would use casually to describe sex.

Pretty sure with the c- d TOS dictators, if he worded it how it was used he would be banned.
