Having been to about 2/3 of the countries listed, I'd have to say Japan--from mobile broadband & cell phones to transportation systems to electronic toilets and robots. The small Baltic state of Estonia is also reputed to be very advanced with mobile phone services (including payment by mobile phone) and e-government--remarkable, considering the Cold War ended not long ago.
I would have to definitely say Japan for gadgets but when it comes to military it is the US. The US is the only country that controls satellites that can listen in on any mobile phone in the world! Its scary but true.

Yet, I still can't get cell phone service in the subway.
You are quite right. Nothing of any worth has ever come from the UK. I think they are the least inventive people in the world and little better than most of the third world. Well said.
The British in the 20th century invented radio (Marconi transmitted from Britain to New Foundland), discovered the electron (Thompson), the neutron (Cavendish) invented RADAR, the Jet Engine (Whipple) and penicillin. The first description of modern satellite communications was by a Britain (Arthur C. Clarke). The first cloned animal was Dolly the sheep and this was done in Britain. DNA was also discovered and its structure characterized in Britain by Watson and Crick. Britain has the best universities in Europe and wins more Nobel prizes per capita than any nation. So much for least inventive
In terms of commercial, or patentable, technology, Japan is the clear leader and in all patentable technology fields as indicated by the most recent data on innovation. Despite contradictory claims found on the Internet, the statement is true—those contradictory claims stem from pure ignorance, or lack of knowledge and understanding about the statistics they use to base those claims, or perhaps they are simply outdated. Per capita, both Japan and South Korea have the most patents by far than any countries. Japan is the world leader or among the best in certain science fields such as material science. Moreover, instead of the absolutist perspective of Westerners, one should adopt a more relativist perspective when interpreting those statistics. Japanese R&D investment practices differs from that of the U.S., it allocates its R&D funds in the private sector mainly—which means that investment priorities are affected by profitability. The U.S. invest more in the public sector than Japan. Moreover, Japan invest far less in basic sciences than the U.S., which the number of scientists in those respective countries suggests. The U.S. also practices patent inflation and a lot more so than Japan. For instance, the U.S. pushed for patent inflation in order to include software innovations—this can be seen as a political move in order to protect U.S. interests. Being the first mover, it greatly benefited them as they were the first to mobilize their local industry. One must know when analyzing patent statistics, that the number of patent application is less reliable than the number of patent granted. Also, international patent, contrarily to national patent, only has a procedural distinction and is not indicative of innovation. The best reliable data for important patentable innovation is the trilateral patent data.
The Second most advanced technology after the US has to be France. Beside the US, it's the only country in the World that has developed a very diverse and broad technology base. Wether it's electronic, space research, aeronautic, engineer, biomedical research, military, nuclear, agriculture, France has it all. The country is also one of the leading country in every field. The rest of Europe has to coorporate to build their military arsenal and heavily rely on the US for supply, France builds everything it needs for his military. It's still the only country that possesses nuclear carrier outside of the US. It is top notch in nuclear research, biomedical inovations, and export energy. It has probably one of the most, if not the most efficient energy program in the world. It's also the second food producing country in the World. Consider its size, this is more than impressive. France was the first country outside of the Former-USSR and US to develop a space program, and its space program still overshadow the rest of Europe. They're second bes in the World in biomedical research and inovation. Unlike the most of the world, it's not the "know how" that France lacks, it's the deep "pocket." Other the the US, I can't possibly think of any country with a more advanced and diverse technology. It's clearly the World second best.
The U.S. is really ONLY technology advanced in its military technology.
I"ve been living abroad for over ten years...and I'm amazed how far behind the U.S. is in many things. Particularly things like subways, cellphones, etc. THese are just very basic amenities. Most U.S. cities don't have subways, and the cellphones suck in the U.S.

Sorry, but you took my post out of context - I was being sarcastic in response to another poster who was having a go
