So I was looking on twitter and a tweet was like

Where you from?

Essex

Oh so you know Joey Essex and the cast of Towie.

So I was just wondering when you tell them where you are from , has anyone ever said anything like that.

Depends where I'm travelling.

People asking if I know so and so in Toronto, a city 3,364 K as the bird flies away from Vancouver.

In Europe, and to a degree the US, wondering why I don't speak French.

Hilarious... although, I guess it's more common for Quebecers and other Canadians from Toronto - eastward to go to Europe/eastern U.S. due to lower airfares and less travel time?... At least it's way cheaper for you to visit say, Hawaii, or Thailand, or San Francisco, or Puerto Vallarta...

I generally get a positive reaction when I say I'm from Canada, although I feel like I need to give some elaborate explanation of where exactly in Canada I'm from... it actually surprises me how many foreigners actually know where the Canadian Maritimes even are.

Usually it's "Well no wonder you speak English so well" and "Oh! I knew once a person from Norway, his name is Olle. Do you know him?"

I find the people in PV know Vancouver very well because of all the Vancouverites that visit and own property there.

Europeans vary in their knowledge about Canada...sometimes amazingly ignorant about the basics.

I think for me the most surprising is some in the UK. I always assumed that they would know more about Canada.

I find myself mostly having to explain how big Canada is.

I've always been well received pretty much any place we have visited. If it's a Spanish speaking country, the first question is almost always, "Where did you learn to speak Spanish?"

Another common response is for people to name the places in the US that they have visited.

When I say Massachusetts, they assume I'm snobby. I am a little snobby.
