New York is much more cosmopolitan. There is at least 1 person from every country on Earth in New York and it has the most pronounced diversity of any place in the world.

Shanghai doesn't have the diversity factor to make it cosmopolitan but it is a polished city with upscale options across the board. I read a few years ago that Shanghai had become a testing ground for most of the wineries in the world for the Chinese market, that they would open stores or sell their products in Shanghai and depending on the demand and value, it would gauge whether the product would last in China or not. In addition to that, Shanghai probably has a built up performing arts and cultural institutions in place. So it is cosmopolitan in that sense.

Shanghai probably also attracts the brightest minds in China as well, similar to New York in America. Lots of different things contribute to how cosmopolitan a city is and Shanghai is hampered by the diversity argument but likely makes up ground in other ways.

Still, New York wins. Probably top two in the world, along with London, in cosmopolitanism.

I am pretty sure New York doesn't have one person from ever country as very few places outside of Australia have one person from all of the Oceanian countries, but I do agree New York is more cosmopolitan than Shanghai.

^^ Fair enough.

To further clarify, however, New York has 1 person from every country in the world that the United States has a database for. There are some countries that the United States doesn't have a database for, so you might be right but there's no way to know that for sure. However, from all the countries that the United States tracks immigration from, New York has at least 1 person from them all. The United States has records for the majority of the world's countries but they are missing information for 11-12, some of them not formally a country on their own or recognized as one, but yeah.

Since when is Shanghai cosmopolitan?

Hong Kong ok, Singapore ok, Taipei ok, Seoul ok, Tokyo ok.

But Shanghai?! It's in a de facto communist country. Enough to be discarded.

Even in Spain you hear that NY is the capital of the world...

OK, what does "communist" mean?

communism

a theory or system of social organization in which all property is owned by the community and each person contributes and receives according to their ability and needs.

Does that look like today's China? China doesn't even pursue communism any more and has been going toward the opposite direction for years.

I agree NYC is far more cosmopolitan than Shanghai, but to use your argument is a bit ignorant and shows you haven't been to Shanghai, and do not know anything about it.

Shanghai is largely homogeneous, but so are Tokyo and Taipei. Dont let ideological different cloud your judgement. None of them is that cosmopolitan (if that means multip-cultural).

NYC is not the capital of the world, maybe capital of the western world, because there are many countries and cultures where people believe in different things. There is no capital of the world. I am sure most of the 1.3 b in China, 1.3 in India, 1 b in Africa, millions in the middle east won't think NYC as the centre of their world.

Obviously there is no capital of the world, but if you have to pick one then NYC or possibly London are the only choices. These are the only huge 10M+ metropolis that offer some cultural, culinary and other amenities for just about every nationality on Earth. Also the UN is there.
Unless you live in a small country with only one large city no city is viewed as the center of the world. Even half of Americans don't see NYC that way. By the same token I bet most Chinese people don't see Shanghai as the center of their world unless there are specific reasons.

China is just as capitalist as the U.S Don't be fooled by what some write and say. Back to the topic it is hard to beat NYC in the cosmopolitan "department". But Shanghai has improved a lot

Just do not forget Shanghai has a competitor in China: Beijing.

Beijing has nearly 20 million residents and has the best colleges, best research institutes, financial headquarters, and most talented artists, most billionaires.

Beijing is not like DC in the US, instead it is like Boston+LA+DC.
