Wouldn't asian cities or communist cities feel the most exotic if you're from i.e. US?
Somewhere like Ulaanbatar(Mongolia) or Vladivostok(Russia)?

My friend says Morroco is the most dodgy place he has ever been to.

London.
It's the place where Sherlock Holmes lives and it's located somewhere far away, on exotic island. It has strange-looking buses running in the city and the guards wear strange wool hats that I saw only in remote regions of Caucasus. On top of that, it has odd-looking clock on that tower, sort of like Spasskaya Tower in Kremlin, but not quite.
(This is what normal clock looks like)

Rio de Janeiro. Poll was closed. I've been once. If not anything else, the natural setting and the vibe is off the charts. I'd like to go back but, since looking over your shoulder is part of the experience, I haven't tried to do so.
I saw Buenos Aires on the list. It's interesting, but not exotic. It feels just like Europe.
I think Asia would throw me for a loop. I'd be perplexed by the script and wouldn't proceed to rent a car. Though I'd like to see Tokyo and Hong Kong, they are not urgent "must sees."
No city is Europe is on the poll, except Moscow. Except for the square that has St. Basil's and their beautiful Metro stations, I have no interest in going to Russia.
For me, the most fascinating cities in the world are Rio de Janeiro, Venice, and Paris.
My favorites, OTOH, are Lisbon, Buenos Aires, and Montreal.

Im so happy a few people chimed in about Istanbul. While my hear belongs to Australia, for exoticness, Istanbul is one of the top ciities in exoticness for me. Its a sensory overload. Amazing structures/ruins both old and new, great food, good bargains (back then - 10 years ago) and some very nice people. I always tell people its the one city in the world I could easily live in. I felt safe wandering about alone on foot, tram, ferry or bus. Anyone that wants a fun, safe, exciting foray into something different (from the US) should look into non-stop flights from JFK to IST.

I've heard it's dicey...that something will most likely not happen, but you have to be "on guard." It's not exactly Rome or Athens.

Rio, and especially Buenos Aires don't feel exotic to me. They feel more like Europe/America than anything else. Rio reminds me a lot of Miami and BA reminds me a lot of Paris.
Any city in India, Iran, Indonesia, SE Asia (like Vietnam) is always going to win me over. The culture there is dramatically different.

I'll give you BA feels like Europe, but Rio can't be compared to anything else. It's natural setting makes it uniquely photogenic.
