Most exotic foreign city to you?
Which do you consider to be the most "exotic" city in the world?
I'd personally go with Istanbul, followed by Rio de Janeiro. Moscow is more "mysterious and intriguing" than "exotic" but its also a good destination I want to go to for an "adventure".

I've been to Istanbul and will attest that I felt like I was really far away from home. The city is very interesting for Westerners. If you want to go somewhere that is really memorable and a pleasant experience, I'd recommend it and the country of Turkey, for that matter. I felt much more "well traveled" after that trip. Nearly everyone speaks English so it's easy to travel within the city.

Samarkand. Actually I don't know if it's that exotic but I sort-of like the name. It also has that "Silk Road" history.
Mandalay in Burma also sounds like it'd be exotic. It might actually be exotic as Burma/Myanmar is a fairly isolationist society so its cities might be less Westernized than most. Luang Prabang, Laos might be another possibility. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site in a somewhat isolationist non-Western nation, although it reportedly gets a fair amount of tourists.
Of more modern cities maybe Bandar Seri Begawan is exotic. Or I just wanted to say Bandar Seri Begawan
Granted much of what's exotic depends on where you're starting from. If you're starting from a more "Eastern" cultural perspective than Reykjavik, Iceland or Lafayette, Louisiana might be highly exotic. Provo, Utah could also be exotic from some perspectives.

DC. I cannot think of a single place in the world I'd expect to feel more completely foreign.

Tokyo, as someone who is mildly allergic to technology overload, brash lights and modernism it is about the most alien place to me on earth !
In terms of pleasant "Exotic" proper somewhere like Istanbul , Udaipur in India, most cities in Yemen , Djenne in Mali etc...

Hong Kong is my favorite city in the world. Its a merged version of English and Chinese culture.
