Wow, Astana and Almaty don't even make the list although Podgorica does. St. Petersburg and Dubai should both be in the Beta group. Sofia is a little high.

Beijing an Alpha+? The guy who made list is totally Asian, considering that 5 cities listed there were in eastern Asia. Lol.

What the hell is this list based on anyway? Economy, quality of life or everything?

Why are you surprised about it?
Beijing is one of the largest cities in the world, the capital of a powerful country, and has the most billionaires in the world.

Beijing should top New York or London. The capital of the second largest economy and one of the largest cities in the world. It is probably New York and DC combined.

Paris over Beijing? LOL.
Paris is the capital of France. Beijing is capital of China. France is like a province in China

It would be China's richest province by far concentrating 22% of the entire economy with only 4.7% of the total population.

Paris alone would have 6.8% of the entire Chinese economy with only 0.8% of the population, Paris is twice the economy of Beijing.

Well then your GDP PPP should be 56K B$ not 23K B$, anyway even if Beijing could be ranked in front it doesn't mean at all that Paris is not alpha + . Global cities aren't cities that only concentrate the highest number of millionars/billionars, it's cities that are good -to exellent-... absolutely everywhere.

These rankings also depends A LOT on the methodology for ranking (which generally I didn't find, they protect their methodologies most of the time ). It even depends on who financed the paper. In China Sanghai or Beijing or HK will appear always ultra top, in Europe London / Paris or in USA NY, LA, Chicago...

Anyway you put Dubai and Paris on the same level that's a no-no.
What you are seeking is probably an economic power index more than a global power index.

Other rankings I fastly found on Google other than the ranking of this topic :
Global Power City Index (GPCI) - Institute for Urban Strategies
The World
Or our dear Wiki that you read already I guess and is linked to most of the papers we can find:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global...l_Cities_Index ... Browse the sources, it's interesting (you ll find the two paper I quoted).

What I see more than a critic of a single ranking, is the redundancy of 4/5 major cities most the time in almost every ranking, Paris is one of those, not Beijing nor Shangai -at least not yet-. The chinese city that is constantly here is Hong-Kong because of its financial power.

Remember that Paris is the result of a strong centralization culture in France, and the second biggest city in Europe after London -biggest in UE now... since UK is leaving-.
And UE is not small, It is actually gigantic economically :
EU position in world trade - Trade - European Commission

It also concentrates absolutely everything that France has economicaly, politicaly, culturaly blablabla (G7 member /G20 member/ NATO member, same level of nuclear strenght than China and owner of ICBM, host of everything that touchs politics in FR, probably one of the most visited city in the world, best/biggest universities that france has ) ... (well this over-centralization is a terrible default for France IMO, except to appear in cities ranking ).

A little bit of propaganda from french gov that I ll spray to feed my unlimited ego () :
20 facts and figures that show just how much the Paris region has to offer | Gouvernement.fr

See Paris has a city with 1/5th of the population of a province like Heibei & that produce 25-30% of its GDP; if we consider that this province would have a (nominal) gdp of 2.4K B$ and concentrate absolutely everything you can have in a modern economy.
Its GDP (PPP this time) is 300B$ higher than Beijing in 2014 (well I don't know how this Brooklyn institute computed this but it seems ok considering how cities are ranked like Tokyo Seoul or NY ).
So I consider than Paris is not overrated and has its place at least behind London, NY, Tokyo as an alpha+++++ xyz whatever city.

Message is, Paris is not a week end/holidays destination only, far from it .

I'm not sure what the criteria for this ranking is, but most certainly the Alpha ++ should have more than two cities on it, and of those cities not sure why London would automatically be included.

Alpha ++ should certainly include Tokyo, Hong Kong, Sao Paulo, and probably Paris

Dubai should not be in the same class as any of the cities in the Alpha + category, it shouldn't even be in any Alpha category.

Lima, Berlin, Montreal, Rio de Janeiro should all be in higher categories.
