Turkey invaded and occupied a portion of Cyprus. That's why.

If the world doesn't accept it, it's as good as not being independent.

Sounds very similar to the relations between Taiwan-China for Cyprus-Turkey. Despite the conflict, remaining tentative peaceful enough without too much turmoil or assertive mix of issues emerging. Hopefully, not getting any worse than the exact current points of reference. On the Global Terrorism index scale, not too negative with the score of Cyprus, yet not nearly as stable compared to what I thought of to this exotic Mediterranean island destination zone. If I am partying out in Ayia Napa (Cyprus equivalent of Ibiza Balearic Islands Spain), is there ever any dangers to explosive attacks? Fortunately doubtful with the same score range compared to Finland, Czech Republic, Japan, Malaysia, Chile, Italy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Terrorism_Index. Some people may believe Cyprus is entirely Greek source of classical inspiration. Yet the entire nation is roughly an equal distribution between Turkish, and Greek roots in the past.

371 British servicemen (mainly conscripts) lost their lives in Cyprus between 1956 and 1959 by armed Greek Eoka Greek Cypriot Nationalists, who planted bombs and carried out shootings.

BBC News - Can Cyprus overcome its bloody history?

The forgotten soldiers buried in no man's land - Telegraph

The island was divided after the 1974 Greek coup d'etat and subsequent Turkish invasion, however ill feeling between the two ethnic groups has been on-going for a long long time.

Todaty there is still a UN Buffer Zone which is patrolled by the British Army.

In this era, there are sovereignty laws.

It's no longer the era where people can just kill, destroy, and claim new lands from others. Hence, the political controversy of it all...

I dunno. Why don't the Turks just admit they committed genocide against the Armenians?

Who knows.
