No-one is denying that there has been unrest in Paris.

The question is whether this will have much impact upon you as an overnight visitor to the city, and the answer to that depends where you go. As long as you stay reasonably close to central Paris, take care of your possessions and use your common sense and street-smart (which most US urban citizens should have by now, hopefully), then you'll be fine.

The biggest problem you'll likely have, statistically speaking, is organized pickpocketing and aggressive begging. This has become worse in recent years. To counterbalance that though, there is also a more visible police/military presence.

It's not only "unrest" (what a delicate way to describe killing sprees) , certain neighbourhoods of Paris and surroundings are no-go zones, particularly for women , and open sewers to boot :

Women in Paris are being threatened by 'migrant men' | Daily Mail Online

I know that neighborhood and believe it or not, this article is 100% accurate, my only critic is that they don't expose enough the nastiness of the place....(it stinks urine and faeces pure and simple)

I did point out that this depends on where visitors choose to go.

As for open sewers, it's pretty self-evident that the look and feel of the city isn't great right now in many parts.

...and I forgot to mention the fact that the pictures published by the Daily Mail are not showing that infamous neighbourhood but the Champs Elysees and central Paris.
