The Trinidad and Tobago anthem is rather underrated:

As a German, I like the Polish and the Dutch anthem more than the German one.

But the European anthem is for me by far the best one:

^ Beethoven is glorious.

My own favorite one is actually not the current German anthem, but the one of the old DDR - "Auferstanden aus Ruinen"

The line "Lass das Licht des Friedens scheinen" in the second verse sound almost tender.

As for the worst one - no idea.

Australia: "Our home is girt by sea"

I know our anthem is a tedious dirge, singing praises to one person instead of the country, but at least we dont have that in it (even though its true for us as well).

Its just an awful line for so many reasons. Archaic language has its place in songs and poems for sure- evoking bygone ages or just finding melodious or poetic language. That's neither. Its not a particularly sweet sounding word (it does sound a lot like "dirt") and it's juxtaposed with "for we are young and free"- which suggests a forward thinking theme, until "girt" comes along. It suggests a small remote island, not a continent. Its such a bad line it kills the entire song. It makes it the worst anthem in the world, or certainly the worst one in English.

God save the Tzar is typical "king´s anthemn"- there is no word about country or people, only glorifying the monarch. I liked the melody and as well the words what are really simplistic or minimalistic. Interestingly- Russian empire used before that God save the Tzar the Britsh anthemn with Russian lyrics in 19th century.

About the obsolete anthemns- East-German anthemn is beautiful.

Here is anthemn of Soviet Estonia, I found the music of to be beautiful:

Old "karaoke" version:

However, the lyrics of that anthemn was ideologically very uploaded, about the party, Lenin and other soviet stuff, for Estonians it means nothing and is seen as a "russki communist occupation" song only. The music is however really good, better than that of current official Estonian anthemn-by Ernesaks, one of the most prominent composer and conductor here.

When I lived there as an American military dependent (1957-59), we Taipei American school students had to learn the song. Whenever we went to the local movie theaters to see a US film, the feature was always preceded by the Nationalist anthem and everyone stood to sing it.

The Star Spangled Banner, while conveying historic patriotism, is not the best fitting for the US - kind of awkward and butchered by so many "artists". America the Beautiful is better suited IMO, and is a heart-warming song.

Never been a fan of "God Save the Queen". There's much better candidates for a UK/English national anthem in my opinion.

Cheers! But where's that comment you made: "The US can wipe its ass with Wales"??!! From when I said the US anthem was rubbish. Got deleted, did it?!

It's not as good as the Welsh anthem, is it?!

Although with our's, it's difficult to remember the words, especially when you've had a few pre-match drinks. Then you just do the "Gwlad! Gwlad!" bit...
