Saint Helena Island had relatively limited access until quite recently.

They have built an airport but it is not suitable for commercial flights due to wind shear. What a pity!

Didn't the government inspect the site before they built the airport?

Relative to geographic positioning of far away. I just found out areas of Western USA to Eastern Europe is literally three airplane transfer rides away! Minimal of 20 to 35 hours nonstop in almost every case. Quite a logistical nightmare. Although, never complain when you have the opportunity to travel.

Another rule of thumb is when leaving major urban centers into the less dense wilderness. For another angle, this map represents the average scale without thinking of exact location. Maximum modern convenience allows only 5 days at the longest.

One overly arbitrary question: Why is Lhasa Tibet not performing successfully that rustic on the map?

A lot of Tibet is pretty dark on that cool map.
