Chicken Balls is a name used only in Canada, but as Acajack says its the same type of crappy American/Canadianized style of food in both places.

Often these things have more batter than chicken in them: like 80% batter and a tiny piece of chicken in the middle.


Though I must confess I do like to have that as comfort food a couple of times a year. Does that make me a bad person?

No you aren't.

Sweet and Sour chicken is pieces of chicken in a sweet and sour sauce. They aren't usually covered in batter, but can be but aren't in balls. Chicken Balls are always covered in batter, and as you say, are mostly batter. Not good value IMO.

More of the same NA Chinese food that really isn't Chinese...but like " junk " food can be satisfying at times.

Oh those wacky Canadians!

And no, it doesn't make you a bad person to like Chicken Balls/Sweet and Sour Chicken. I prefer pork but it's definitely a (very!) occasional comfort food treat.

Did your KFC's have Popcorn Chicken? They are similar to Chicken Balls, but KFC's batter.

I've had popcorn chicken before (though not at KFC), but it's quite different from chicken balls in a fake Chinese takeout place.

I looked up sweet and sour chicken on Google Images, and those pics that come from American restaurants look quite similar to our chicken balls. Maybe not as round, but basically the same thing as far as I can see.

...therein lies the difference. One is a ball, one is not. You also must be just seeing battered ones. In other words, you can have sweet and sour chicken without batter and not made into in balls, but you can't have Chicken Balls without the batter or being a ball

Never thought I'd talk so much about chicken balls LOL
