Venezuela’s government this week urged citizens to see rabbits as more than “cute pets” as it defended a plan to breed and eat them even as the opposition says this would do nothing to end chronic food shortages.

The “Rabbit Plan” is an effort by the government of President Nicolas Maduro to boost food availability. Authorities have also taught citizens to plant food on roofs and balconies of their homes.

Why can't they just plant more vegatables and breed more cattle?

Why rabbits and not fish considering the amount of water Venezuela has?

My parents have a rabbit as a pet, and they are as lovely as dogs and cats. The simple idea of eating rabbit meat scares me. And Nicolás Maduro is a leader which I love to hate. Apart of being a dictator and destroying the economy of Venezuela, he is desestabilising the geopolitics in Latin America and causing a headache for Brazil, which is the only country of Mercosur sharing a border with Venezuela. And, as all of this were not enough, he is now a murder of rabbits. Please, tell me one single reason for not hating this moustached devil from the depths of my soul...

The thugs who have sacked Venezuela and stripped it of its assets, and who couldn't run a hot dog stand to generate current income, are probably thinking that rabbits breed at a faster pace than cattle and fish or than vegetables grow; in any case they do not require a growth and distribution infrastructure, which they have already sacked and stripped, so anyone can raise rabbits in cages and with modest amounts of grass and other vegetables.

Or it is some kind of sick joke like "let'em eat cake".

This is not going to end well.

Good Luck!

The people there are starving. If they had vegetables, they'd eat them themselves. If they had grains, they'd eat them themselves. The government destroyed their agricultural system. They even destroyed even most of their oil production capacity.

We are still at the pets or food stage. And Michael Moore is a politically correct reference for Venezuela as opposed to Charlton Heston

These agricultural industries rely more on central organization and distribution networks supported by intact and uninterrupted hard and soft infrastructure.

Rabbits and chickens, on the other hand, can be raised and processed by the end consumer. Also, compared to beef and vegetables, the turn around time from birth of the stock to the dinner plate is measured in weeks, not months to years.
