You mean they were being HONEST? How refreshing.

And by the way, unless we're talking factual data, it's all opinion.

So it should come as no surprise that a UK-based ranking once again places it's own schools abnormally high because that's their OPINION. Surprise Surprise

And there is NOTHING opinion-based about this:

Either an alumnus of your school won a Nobel Prize or Field Medal or they didn't.

Either your instructor has a Nobel Prize or Field Medal or they don't.

Either you are highly cited in 21 broad subject categories or you aren't.

Either your work was published in Nature & Science or it wasn't.

Either you work is indexed in Science Citation Index or Social Science Citation Index or it isn't.

Either you have high per capita academic performance or you don't.

Look, how uncomplicated^

Unless the results aren't what you like, then it's very complicated. LOL.

"Others have pointed out, the ARWU is known for "relying solely on research indicators", and "the ranking is heavily weighted toward institutions whose faculty or alumni have won Nobel Prizes": it does not measure "the quality of teaching or the quality of humanities."

Someone also pointed out that the citations are biased heavily towards those in the English language and not taking those from the top European universities into account.

You see, while the facts seem to be legit at face value, a little probing reveals their methodology to be a little suspect.

And have won Field Medals and are published in academic journals and highly cited.

Why on earth would I want to learn from anyone who is less than the most accomplished and most highly regarded in my chosen field?

I mean, really. LOL.

The QS ranking is very similar to the US News and World Report Undergrad Ranking.

Its pretty well known in academic circles that when US News' first undergrad ranking came out in 1983, the Ivy League schools were not too happy about Berkeley and Michigan being in the top 10, Berkeley was 5th.

1983 US News Natl University Undergrad Ranking
1 Stanford
2 Harvard
3 Yale
4 Princeton
5 UC Berkeley

The funny part is, the first ranking was a survey, but answered only by University Presidents, which is about the only survey on this matter I'll buy. That's straight from the horse's mouth.

Then suddenly the criteria changed to include alumni giving, class size and other criteria that permanently shut out any public university from ever being able to crack the top 10 or 20 for that matter.

I see parallels with the undergrad USNWR ranking with QS. They handicap schools based on peripheral, touchy-feely criteria that has nothing to do with the actual depth of the curriculum or faculty.

Scientific research and development remains important in British universities, with many establishing science parks to facilitate production and co-operation with industry. Between 2004 and 2012 the UK produced 6% of the world's scientific research papers and had an 8% share of scientific citations, the third- and second-highest in the world (after the United States' 9% and China's 7% respectively). Scientific journals produced in the UK include Nature, the British Medical Journal and The Lancet. In terms of those scientific papers deemed most influential globally, Britain accounted for 15% which is not bad for a country with only 1% of the worlds population.

And sorry but health care efficiency is not the same thing as quality of health care.

The US dominates this list and most of these schools have top tier hospitals.
