Before I start compiling the list and the methodology to share with everyone else, I just want to take this moment to state that this list is not gospel. It is not meant to be taken literally. I am posting this here to share this information with all of you and so that way hopefully we can get into a discussion, state what we like about the list, what we agree with, what we disagree with. Things of that nature.

How We Define The Categories
The ranking evaluates each qualifying city across the six pillars of place equity: Place, Product, Programming, People, Prosperity, and Promotion. The performance of the Top 100 cities in this report is summarized in radar charts. Each hexagon in a radar chart represents a category of a city’s competitive identity.
Place:
The perceived quality of a city’s natural and built environment, including the sub-categories of Air Quality, Weather, Crime Rate, Neighborhoods & Landmarks, and Parks & Outdoor Activities.
Product:
A city’s key institutions, attractions and infrastructure, including the sub-categories of University Rankings, Airport Connectivity, Convention Center, Entertainment, and Museums.
Programming:
The arts, culture, entertainment and culinary scene in a city, including the sub-categories of Shopping, Culture, Culinary, and Nightlife.
People:
The immigration rate and diversity of a city, including the sub-categories of Education and Foreign-born Residents.
Prosperity:
A city’s employment and corporate head offices, including the sub-categories of Unemployment, GDP per capita, and Global 500 companies.
Promotion:
The quantity of stories, references and recommendations shared online about a city, including the sub-categories of Google search results, Google Trends, Facebook Check-ins, and TripAdvisor reviews.

Moscow shouldn't be in the Top 50, even. Lots of other frauds- St. Petersburg, Dubai, San Jose (not even a city, really), Vegas (also not really a city).
NYC should probably be #1, DC should probably be in Top 10 or 15. Singapore is a generic city with nothing of interest besides food and should be like #30-#40 or so.
Wow, I just learned that a city with the largest historic center, some of the greatest art museums and cultural institutions, one of the most beautiful metro systems, and one of the most magnificent settings of any city in the world is actually a "fraud". I feel so enlightened.

That list is very skewed to the northern hemisphere. It seems to rank the large centres of the most populated countries highly.
It is very different to the lists of most liveable cities which come out annually.

Moscow is a very modern city with comparatively little historic stock, and it doesn't have any of the world's leading art museums. And not sure what either issue has to do with city importance.
And putting aside the fact that Moscow has boring topography, it has nothing to do with anything. A city isn't more or less important based on geography.
Also don't understand the Metro reference. A city is more important if the Metro looks nice?

I was actually talking about St Petersburg, not Moscow (although you clearly know nothing about Moscow either).
And it's obvious that you didn't even bother to look at the criteria before doing your NYC booster dance and sh*ting on cities you know very little about. The ranking is not about importance (which is a nebulous term anyway that can be interpreted 100 different ways) but specifically, as stated at the very top of the page, about "quality of place, reputation and competitive identity". And yes all of those things I listed (including quality of infrastructure and setting) are relevant to these stated criteria.
