I was under the impression that there WAS at least one PBS station in the US? I remember watching the PBS news with Jim Lehrer in Australia (which was excellent BTW - none of this ADD-inducing 30 sec snippet rubbish favoured by populist newscasts). I'm not sure it's govt funded however...perhaps that is what you are referring to.
Both the corporate and the govt funded models have their issues, however I'm inclined to agree that the public model is much less biased due to the fact that there is less reliance on advertisers for money.

Discover America and Self
How can somebody judge America as one individual? America is about diversity and "for different folks are different strokes." Everyone entitles to a viewpoint.
Personnaly, being born overseas, I've enjoyed America since my arrival. I've seen poor and dealt with rich; middle and low and upper middle class. I've seen them all. This is what America is all about. Everyone has so much to discover here. The opportunity is endless.
It's up to the individual to get "Stuck and Suck" or to move forward for better, no matter where a person in his/her life (finnancially or emotionally). Think positive.
Best,
ZV

I live in Sweden (Stockholm) but I plan to live to the US someday.
I love almost everything about it. I think it's the greatest country in the world.

Pride & Prejudice
I encounter the worst prejudices here in Paris from people who've never been to the US or only on package holidays. But this prejudice is very ambiguous.
The most funny (in a sense ) dialogue I had was with a colleague at work.
She : I hate the US, they are a nation of outlaws, of warriors, of fascists like Bush.
Me : but it's strange I see you have a book by James Ellroy [if I remember well], isn't he american ? Why not Balzac ?
She : I find French literature boring, I'm only interested in American literature, cinema and music
What to make of that ?

This is interesting. I live on the outside of Göteborg and I'm American. When I did the residency interview at the Swedish Consulate in Los Angeles , I encountered many Swedish citizens waiting for various services , such as passport renewels , etc. Every one of them said they'd never go back to Sweden except to visit family and friends. I even asked the Swedish girl who gave the interview to me , if she missed home and wanted to go back. She said no way , that she loved Los Angeles. Personally I can't see why anyone would love LA , but I thought all Swedes loved that Socialist paradise with all it's entitlements.

The only things I like about Sweden are probably the nature, Stockholm and the culture. Otherwise it's just cold and boring. The state is powerful and makes a lot of moral judgements and even though the taxes are very high both France and Britain has got better healthcare and a lot of european countries have better public schools.
The middle-class in USA is like the upper-class in Sweden and the upper-class in USA doesn't exist at all in Sweden.
Then ofcourse, I love the american culture and all the different states and the big cities, and I love the desert, the mountains and the coasts.
So, it has little to do with the weather.
I think quite a few people are tired of Sweden's politics and the swedish mentality, so that's why they wanted to stay in LA.

I was talking to a friend today in göteborg and it seems every day lately has been this constant on and off again rain. I'm tired of it. I love the desert as well. Actually took my family over last August to Arizona. I think what most people don't realize is that about a third of Arizona is forested.
I don't even want to get into the politics thing , but I think most countries including the United States are the same when it comes to politicians not living by the same rules and laws they force and impose on their citizens. I see this in every country on the planet. None of them have the perfect formula. If they insist they do , then we're talking Public Relations Propaganda and they all have their own Damage Control departments as you know.
Cheers,

But it's also about what's been mainstreamed and accepted - high-profile America in general. That's what my post was about.

I'm glad you mentioned that NOW. Well, what a great conversation we had. I only wish more people participated.
