This is not a surprise to many, but the chart helps to visualize just how big a discrepancy there is between first and second place, when ranked per nation. It might be interesting to see how it looks when corrected for population or other demographics.

Statista: China Dominates Skyscraper Construction

Data sets are based upon the following study by CTBUH: 2017 Year in Review - The Skyscraper Center

Skyscraper is defined as any multi-storey, continuously habitable tall building of commercial, residential, hotel or mixed use function of 200 meters height or greater, including spires. Supertalls are those with the same characteristics above 300 meters in height.

Not surprising at all. China has a number of megacities that are booming. I actually thought the UAE would be higher on the list, but I know that a number of projects have been canned.
The US is also in the middle of a skyscraper boom after decades of stagnation.

Not really. While Japan has a large number of high rises, there are very few buildings over 200m.

I regularly frequent skyscrapercity and I can tell you that there are plenty of them under construction. The below list only takes into account the completed ones, but there are plenty more in different stages of development.

I thought Saudi Arabia would be on the list as they are currently building a skyscraper at least 1 km high.

It's still under construction. It will be a few years before the kingdom tower is complete.
