my friend, Greece is very expensive. if you plan on going there make you sure bring a lot of $$.
Thessaloniki, Katerini, Agios Panteleimonas are wonderful places. As far as island I reccomend my person favorite Crete. But if you want you can check out Santori it's beautiful. Mykonos is a party island.. They never sleep there..
HAVE FUN !

If you base yourself in Thessaloniki you will be somewhat limited to the # of nearby islands. The penninsulas of Chalkidiki, southeast of The/niki are a very popular summer destination with beautiful beaches. The western most penninsula is the most touristy, the middle one is more isolated and very green. The third and easternmost is like the Vatican of the Orthodox church, where only males can visit. I would highly recommend it for its monesteries and architecture.
Nearby islands to Macedonia are Thassos and Samothraki. Samothraki is very scenic and not highly visited and is also very rugged. On the way to Thassos stop by and check out the scenic city of Kavala.
The Sporades islands ( in the west central Aegean Sea) can be visited by a ferry boat or airplane ride from The/niki and are also highly recommended. Skiathos has the best sandy beaches in all of Greece. The further east you go the more serene these islands are. The are all very green with thick pine tree forests, unlike many greek islands.
Thessaloniki itself has lots of buildings from the Byzantium era. Taxis are the best way to move around in the city and are still affordable
The ancient Macedonian burial grounds in Vergina are also worth checking out.
If you go down to the Cyclade Isles, my favorites are Paros, Santorini and Sifnos.
And yes indeed, with the weak dollar Greece can be expensive. Might want to backpack and visit campgrounds or rent cheap rooms

Seems like I seldom hear good things about Athens as a city...as far as Greek cities go, would Thessaloniki be one of the very best, then?
I'm thinking from an English Teacher perspective...cities to potentially live and work.

Downtown athens isnt a nice place to live. I live in the northern suberbs and only visit the center once or twice in a year! (go figure)
The northern subs though (kifisia area and such) are nice and ffull of foreign people (x-pats etc). Its pricy allright, but once you can afford it, you wouldnt change the lifestyle unless you had too. (not pricier than London though).
As a private english tutor you could be making from 15 to 35euros an hr. Start with 15-20euros/hr and once u built your clientelle raise your prices.
Greece has 4 seasons. Its dry like California and has superb beaches and 24/7/365 a year nightlife. Good food too.
It cna be very unorganised in the public sector and they drive like mad sometimes.
If u can afford the lifestyle, its a nice place to live. You ll never be bored.
Mountains, islands, beaches, plenty of sun all year long, snowboarding in the winter at elast for 3-4 months.
But like i said. Athens in nice only in the pricy suberbs. Not the city..
Thesaloniki....nah....not my kind of place. Its nice to be there as a tourist and enjoy the food but not to live there. High unemployment there too.
Party isles: Mykonos, santorini, paros, Ios, Corfu, Zakynthos, Rhodes, etc etc etc
But nice beaches are pretty much everywhere.
Greece is a place you love to hate. Then u move somewhere else abroad and you miss it like crazy....
