You already asked this question about a year and a half ago.

Why are you asking it again?

Another thread that touches on the subject.

So why are you asking it again?

Is any movie an accurate reflection of American culture? Or anything else?

It's actually based on Nia Vardalos' experiences growing up in a Greek-Canadian family in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Of course they just *had to* transpose the entire story to Chicago, Illinois, USA when they made the movie.

Everyone knows that all Americans are either cops or some kind of mafia/corrupt, heartless businessmen, or drug dealers. Kind of like Russians, I guess. Except that Russians have brilliant musicians among them, too, along with the occasional ballet dancer.

Canada doesn't get enough play in the global media.

Canada doesn't get enough play in the Canadian media. It would probably be wise to start there first!

They, being the backers.

Yes it's frustrating, but Nia first performed the play in Los Angeles. It was seen by various Hollywood types, including Tom Hanks, who eventually was involved in the making of the movie. In other words, the play wasn't known in Canada and all the first interest was American.

Why Chicago? Nia moved to Chicago in 1988. She was probably told that " Canada doesn't sell " in the US. Most likely faced with making a movie, or never getting the chance again, she probably agreed with Chicago, since it was familiar to her.

The film was set in Chicago, and a little filming took place there, but most of the movie was filmed in Toronto:

The family home was in the East York neighbourhood, the travel agency was on the Danforth, Toula attends Truman College a.k.a. Ryerson University, and so on.

If you see any red and white streetcars in an American movie, there's a good chance it was shot in Toronto.
