Yesterday Colombia became the 37th nation to be admitted to the OECD and NATO's first 'global partner' in the hemisphere. All of this while the country heads to the polls tomorrow to elect its president, of whom one of the leading candidates in the polls is a staunch Chavez supporter.
"Colombia has been invited to join the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) despite serious objections from the US about its commitment to protect copyright and intellectual property.
President Juan Manuel Santos said he received a phone call from OECD headquarters in Paris on Friday morning confirming the move, which will make Colombia the 37th OECD member and the third in Latin America alongside Mexico and Chile.
"Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos announced Friday that his country will formally become NATO’s first Latin American “global partner,” beginning next week.
In a televised address from the presidential Narino Palace and on Twitter, Santos said: “We will formalize in Brussels next week — and this is very important — the entry of Colombia into NATO in the category of global partner. We will be the only country in Latin America with this privilege.”
Areas of cooperation include cybersecurity, maritime security, terrorism and its links to organized crime, and building the capacities and capabilities of the Colombian armed forces, according to a statement posted on NATO’s website."
FYI: With a proud naval & military history, Colombia was the only country in South America to combat the Nazis and strike a blow to a German Submarine. Colombia's armed forces were the only Latin American forces to aid the liberation of S.Korea in the Korean war and is a strong security aid & exporter to United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Afghanistan.
It's laughable how a ****ed-up country like Colombia is eligible for the OECD. They should just cancel the whole thing tbh.
There's a school of thought that wants to keep the OECD exclusive. However, Colombia is till a top 40 global economy and has made great strides in turning itself around from a near failed state to what it is now in just 15 years.

The original premise of OECD was a club for developed economies and democracies. The fact that a bunch of not-so-developed European countries have been admitted is already pretty questionable, with members like Mexico, Turkey, and now Colombia, it's becoming more and more like a joke as each new member is introduced.
But whatever. It's not like OECD is particularly relevant beyond publishing dumbass reports that no one ever reads.

There's no shame in it. In fact there's been a certain level of maturity in the debates between the 5 presidential candidates. However, undoubtedly if he's elected a lot of the Foreign Direct Investment will leave the country and a lot of the rich/professional class will be targeted by him hence take their money elsewhere too. Rich people aren't restricted by borders. This will polarise the country even more than it is now as punishing the job creators and getting into debt funding unsustainable social programs only leads to more misery for everyone in the long term. That's been proven time & time again throughout the world. There are other candidates which represent a less extreme option.

You must be talking about that Ivan Duque guy. When one digs into his parties history and some of the people that are supporting him I would say yeah, pretty despicable.
