Shanghai Cooperation Organization is founded by China and Russia, with other Central Asian countries. The goal is basically to counterbalance NATO.

India and Pakistan joined last year. Iran is an "observe" but China and Russia have voiced their support for full membership, so it's just a matter of time.
While not a member state, the President of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad used his speeches at the SCO to make verbal remarks towards the United States.

PS
The United States applied for observer status in the SCO, but was promptly rejected in 2005.
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has stated that he has discussed the possibility of abandoning Turkey's European Union membership candidacy in return for full membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

If Iran joins, that'd unite the entire Asia plus Russia continent, or the center of the world's landmass, with an exception of a few pockets of terrorists controlled states: Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria. That'd have most of the world's population, oil, manufacturing, markets, economic growth ... G7 or G6 would seem less.

I hope Turkey never joins the EU, it would be a disaster.

So, there is a compelling reason why they should not? Why shouldn't the part of the world that is not in NATO have defense treaties to defend them and their neighbors/allies from NATO countries?

Well in this multi polar world... joining one club doesn’t necessarily mean being against another.. take India for example, it joined the SCO but is working close with the US by participating in RIMPAC and quadrilateral dialogue.

And India doesn't really have a good relationship with Pakistan or China. Russia wanted India to join the SCO and China countered with Pakistan. It will be interesting how this rift will play out in this organization.

Out of curiosity what were you reading that prompted you to post this thread? I only ask because you mentioned former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's comments at the SCO meeting, but Ahmadinejad hasn't been the President of Iran since 2013. Is this an old article you are talking about, or is this current news?

True. India is at odds with both Pakistan and China, yet is a crucial member of SCO and BRICS.

Here are the members and potential members in the Future.

Dark Green: Members
Dark Blue: Observers
Purple: Dialog Partners
Teal: Observer Applicants
Light Green: Disputed Territories

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Member...n_Organisation

"Observer Iran has submitted an application for full membership. Meanwhile, in 2012 Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka applied for observer status within the organization. Egypt and Syria has also submitted an application for observer status, while Egypt, Israel, Maldives and Ukraine have applied for dialogue partner status."

I'm guessing since 2014 that Ukraine isn't interested in the SCO?

Very drastic improvising that potentially ends up overly arbitrary. Rational tangent flow is just out of sync. Respective Middle East relations for the former other than the latter. Trying to understand the clarification of usefulness. Unfathomable that Shanghai China really even cares that much going overboard regarding contact to this isolationist eccentric player mysterious loner. Yet Iran is simultaneously offering just enough native wisdom to a handful of diplomatic amiable driven engines of foreign powers. China is not one of them.
