My take:

Population: tie
Economy: of course San Jose
Diversity: San Jose
Shopping: San Jose
Transportation: ?
Downtown: Downtown SJ is more artsy and more interesting as well more of a neighborhood. So San Jose takes this one
Natural Scenery: tie
Weather: San Jose
Airport: San Jose

San Jose got this one over Calgary.

Natural scenery a tie with Calgary having the glorious Canadian Rockies on itís doorstep...
I prefer Calgaryís airport too.

Overall I would pick San Josť for every category except scenery. Canadian Rockies are indeed beautiful.

I lean towards Calgary, with two major caveats:

1) Weather. I have only been to Calgary during the summertime so I dont know if I could do the winters. And I know my wife cannot. So maybe 6 months out of the year we'd have to leave.

2) How close to SF can we get? What boundaries are being used? If it's MSA (and obviously that can change over time) then I'm not interested, but Redwood City I might consider, and San Mateo I would probably take over Calgary. Basically, if I can get to SF relatively easily and quickly then I'm far more inclined to take that route.

Depends. If you take 101, it will take you a year to get to SF with the traffic. I-280 is more scenic and less traffic but it's in the hills and can take just as long sometimes because of that. SF and SJ are 40 miles apart and are two counties away from each other. Redwood City and San Mateo are in the county between them.

Correction: 50 miles apart
