Of the 100 top-ranked universities, the breakdown of countries are as follows:-
https://www.timeshighereducation.com...asc/cols/stats

NORTH AMERICA (46)
41 - United States
5 - Canada

EUROPE (36)
11 - United Kingdom
8 - Germany
7 - Netherlands
3 - Switzerland, Sweden
2 - France
1 - Belgium, Finland

ASIA (12)
3 - China, Hong Kong
2 - Singapore, Japan, South Korea

OCEANIA (6)
6 - Australia

Seems like 63 of the top 100 universities are in one of the 4 english speaking countries (the US, the UK, Canada, Australia).

The University of Hong Kong and the National University of Singapore also use English as the main teaching language. I wouldn't be surprised if a few others do as well. ETH Zurich has all Masters and higher levels only in English, however, German is required for Undergraduates.

Actually, two of your Canadian universities are in French speaking Quebec, although McGill is an English language university, University of Montreal is a French language university.

And Singapore is also an English speaking country, as is Hong Kong (co-official language, the Universities in Hong Kong teach in English). So (at least) 67 of these universities are English speaking.

Many European universities use English in advanced programs, such as PhD in sciences.

88 of the top 100 are in Western world (the United States (41), Developed & Continental Europe (25), the United Kingdom (11), Australia (6) and Canada (5))

Then 9 of them are in highly developed Asian jurisdictions such as Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan and South Korea

Seems like emerging and developing countries need to catch up!

Or it shows a western bias.

Also:

"This year’s list of the best universities in the world is led by the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge for the second year in a row."

They ranked themselves number 1 and 2, haha.

I don't usually take much notice of these annual rankings, however the Times Higher Education World University Rankings are one of the better ranking studies, and Universities do not rank themselves.

Quote:

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2019 includes more than 1,250 universities, making it our biggest international league table to date.

It is the only global university performance table to judge research-intensive universities across all of their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. We use 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons, trusted by students, academics, university leaders, industry and governments.

The calculation of the rankings for 2019 has been audited by professional services firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), making these the only global university rankings to be subjected to full, independent scrutiny of this nature.

Times Higher Education World University Rankings
Then again everybody knows already what the best universities in their countries are, in the UK it is of course - Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, LSE, Edinburgh, Kings, Manchester etc followed by the rest of the Russell Group of Universities.

Don`t hold your breath.

Developing countries usually have a hard enough time just adequately funding K to 12 little alone post-secondary. These ratings are based on many things such as facilities {academic and student} which the developing world can`t afford, class sizes which are larger in poorer countries to keep costs down, and highly qualified profs.

The last part is a real issue even for middle income countries. Profs are obviously the most highly educated people in our society and are very sought after all over the world. The developing countries simply can`t match the vastly higher wages that wealthy countries can offer and being so highly educated makes access to nearly any country a breeze. Even those who may get a decent wage offer in a poorer country still have to contend with profs leaving for wealthy ones which usually have a far higher quality of life and standard of living. Profs due to their high education also tend to be overwhelmingly socially liberal and progressive and {except for oil rich countries} our wealthier countries are also our most liberal and often the poorest countries the most conservative.
