You won't believe this, in Sierra Leone it's $18.43 (US dollars) a gallon ! How can gas be so expensive, especially in such a poor country?! On the contrary, in Venezuela they are paying $0.12 a gallon.
This was one of the reasons I wanted to start this thread. I'm curious to see what price everyone is paying, but I'm hoping to bring awareness to Americans (of which I am one) that we still have it better than most when it comes to petrol prices.
I made a choice in 2001 to sell my car and live without one. I've lived in Europe and the US since then and I make it a point to live where public transportation runs well and I can get to work and a grocery store easily. Where I live, I can walk to both if necessary.
We can all make choices to help get us through this oil nightmare. We can stop buying our lunches for work, buying coffees, buying DVD's, CDs, etc., Not only would we have enough money for petrol, we could eliminate monthly expenses we don't need and get out of debt faster.
But, in all fairness to Americans, gas is expensive when you're used to paying much less.
No, we do not have it better. Most European countries have excellent public transportation in every city and do not rely on cars the same way Americans do. They also have fuel efficient cars that go a longer way than our cars. America runs on gas, literally. Our economy will be destroyed if it raised even another dollar. We are struggling as it is with current gas prices. The price of everything has gone up by 25% (food) because of transportation costs, along with a food supply shortage. If America had bike lanes on every road, excellent bus and train systems in every city and suburb, maybe, just maybe more people could bike to work or walk, or take the train. But we are a suburban country, and most of us would prefer not to get hit by a car while riding our bikes down dangerous roads.
In Paris, Tennessee, Gas prices just went up 20 cents, it's 4.00 dollars a gallon and at two gas stations it's 2.92 a gallon. luckily we have some good gas stations who here who if we pay cash we get 5 cents off a gallon, which is very helpful.
