I think Poland is first world for sure. Brazil and South Africa I wouldn't consider 3rd world. They're too developed to be 3rd world IMO. Saudi Arabia is 1st world despite their backwards society.
Brazil is not entire first world for sure, but may be now with most the people and new government with more capitalist, neoliberal and libertarian mindset we could go into this way

Some pictures maybe helpful on what third world is, or is not. Here're some visuals of street scenes, in Nairobi, Buenos Aires, Kiev, Shanghai, Mumbai (not in that order):
Ruth, I've never seen Russians *missing* Chinese- made goods ( which they consider subpar comparably to European goods.)
What I DO hear however quite often is that Russians are envious of Chinese who kept their Communist party around and that's why in their ( ignorant) opinion the capitalism in China turned out much better than in Russia. They are pointing at the expansion/improvement of infrastructure over there and growth of wealth among the population.
Little do they know that the major factor here is not the "Communist party," but the fact that back in the nineties the US designated China for being its major workshop, and Russia - for gradual destruction.
I haven't even met many Chinese who like to see the Communist party around.
Eastern Asian people are actually pretty good at manufacturing. Japan, South Korea, Taiwan all manufacture a lot of stuff, including the finest automobiles. It's more about people and culture, not US designation.

Shanghai is no doubt a third-world city, even though it's better than the poorer parts of China.
The average salary in Shanghai is lower than Mississippi. The cost of living is cheaper, but housing is expensive, social welfare is next to nonexistent.
Limited internet access, serious air pollution, long commuting hours, among many other issues also adversely affect the quality of life.

Sounds like New York City except for the salary part and internet access part.
Shanghai is definitely more 1st world than New York City.
Shanghai has much better education and health care than NYC, it has better subway or infrastructure in general.
