These lists are always stupid and based on bias.

Why is Sao Paulo making an appearance on so many lists?

Do we have a lot of Paulista's here?

Because it's the most important financial center in South America and is part of a country with one of the world's largest economies.

I've heard some not so great reviews on Sao Paulo as a place to visit. That said, it's so much of a powerhouse, I'd still be willing to check it out. It has to be doing at least some things right. Just to hash it out:
-Most populous Portuguese speaking, Latin American, Western Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere city
-11th Worldwide among Metropolitan GDPs in the World (477 Billion). Would be 26th largest COUNTRY economy in world
-Ranks 5th in world in number of high rises, ranks in Top 25 in world, Top 5 in Americas for attractions (TripAdvisor #)
-Hosts globally renowned museums, sporting tournaments, events (largest gay pride parade in world, etc.)
-Cosmopolitan and mega diverse city with largest Arab/Italian/Japanese diasporas in world.

There's probably more that could be said, but the fact alone that there are 6 inhabited continents in the world. This city is almost certainly the primate city on one of those 6 continents. To me that says enough about how much it belongs.

I also like GaWC's list. It's not accurate and correct for everyone obviously and has proven to be controversial but at least it's something to go on.

I don't know why Boston appears on this list so many times. Within the US, I would say Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, Miami, and San Francisco all should rank higher. Also don't know why Philadelphia is on a GLOBAL list either. I can't even name a major high profile company headquartered in Philadelphia except Comcast, there are many more in Atlanta.
