Interpretation: Talks were frank and cordial, and we have to announce something at this photo op.. So, Chinese is going to eventually be added to the list of elective languages being offered, subject to faculty staffing availability. A policy that wiill be quickly ignored or forgotten. But the highly selective news media will use the "agreement" to support their current bias against China's intended world domination.
I'm studying Mandarin. Except for the alien script, it's easier than I thought. No inflections and pretty logical grammar. I don't find the tones a problem at all.

Same here. Studied Mandarin for a rear and found it wonderfully easy. When my son was six, I made a set of Chinese flash cards and he learned 30 characters in an hour.
How is it useless though? Mandarin is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. With China’s rise, it is only going to gain more prominence.

I agree! I think people should learn Mandarin and Farsi. Even now those two languages are in high demand for translators.

I wouldn't go as far as to label it necessary, but there is definitely a growing demand for it.
