Funnily enough that has already been the case for summer olympics. The last summer olympic game held in a small city was 2004 and that was solely because the Olympics was originally Greek. Even the winter olympics have been held in large countries since 1994. No small country wants to host it for the financial burden.

I suppose Brisbane is a fairly small city but the facilities that are not already in place would be heavily used. Very much a sport culture there. Also the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, to the south and north, are very important tourist destinations with a lot of facilities and accommodation.

Brisbane is smaller than Athens, by my quick look the last city currently smaller than Brisbane to host was Helsinki in 1952.

Brisbane is small but Australia is not. If Brisbane wins the bid a lot of the games would be competed in Sydney and other Australian cities. It’d be Australian East Coast that’s hosting the games, not just Brisbane. Athens is bigger than Brisbane but Greece is tiny and much poorer.

Right--there were a string of cities before Athens that seemed a bit small for it with Sydney, Atlanta, and Barcelona though supposedly Sydney's was considered very successful.

I think aside from Athens which maybe gets a pass for its historic importance, the only city with real issues with hosting in recent years despite being a massive city was Rio which doesn't really meet a benchmark of being in a highly developed country.

As far as small countries go, I can see Singapore especially with some joint Malaysia participation successfully hosting an Olympics game without a ton of waste and possibly generating a profit / lasting useful infrastructure. However, it will be really goddamn hot.

Most sports will held in the Brisbane/Gold Coast/Sunshine Coast urban agglomeration (Currently about 3.5 Million population).

There will of course be some sharing, In the Sydney Olympics for instance, the football tournament was shifted between Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra and Adelaide.

Ha ha can we expect much sharing if, heaven forbid, AP is still premier!!

Queensland Olympics are for Queenslanders could be the motto.

Brisbane, they are an up and coming city with nice surroundings, and are still relatively unknown in the world. It would be a good debut, the rest are already accomplished on the world stage.

Hopefully none

The Olympic games is a big scam and a huge waste of money that only enriches the Swiss mafia. Just look at Brazil and Rio.

The Sydney Olympics were a great success for us here. We loved every minute and ended up with some great facilities.
