But in all fairness, Russia has changed a lot. The old stereotypes really no longer fit. Russia has emerged (among the urban and younger populations) on par with Europe.

Wastina, we visited St. Petersburg in 2000. maybe things are different now, but we observed essentially TWO Russias; the new, improved Capitalistic Russia where the younger generation lives just like their counterparts in Western Europe. We also saw the older generation that was left behind when the rules of the game suddenly changed during Peristroika.

Well the last time Wall -art went to Germany. The Germans didn't understand the happy people thanking them for shopping there. Nor the people putting their groceries in a bag. They could do that themselves? Must be that they were paying too much. Wall-Mart did NOT changed these two things, instead they moved out. Unbelievable, how unsmart that was. Now they go to Russia. I never visited the place, but if they don't want to adapt, and don't manage to succeed in Germany, why on Earth would they go to Russia... what are they, masochists?

Actually, Big W is owned by Australian company, Woolworths Limited! (Not Connected with the English, Woolworths Group)

Walmart, Haven't been able too enter the Australian Market, As Woolworths, Myer and Wesfarmers (Who own Target and K-Mart), Are concerned about allowing Walmart in!

Wal-Mart went into China a few years ago. I don't know how they're doing but retailers seem to have a much harder time than manufacturers in mastering the taste buds of the international consumer.

I have cousins that live outside Perth Australia. We would make our trip into (Wooleys) that's what they would call Woolworths. The town was called Millendon. Not sure of the spelling. Cousins lived in grape country.

Well I would love to see Wal-Mart break into the Australian major retaliers chain. It would stop the monopolisiation of Coles and Woolies totally. Give the greedy buggers a run for their money. We also have a supermarket chain called "Audi" that are slowly making their way around the country. I think they originated in Germany? (please correct me if I am wrong) Is this company in America?

Aldi's? We do have some of them in the US, I'm not sure how widespread they are. It's been years since I've been in Aldi's, but from what I recall it's a very no-frills supermarket that caters towards lower income people... but who knows what they do in other countries.

If they're willing to play the game there (bribes, etc.), then I think Moscow and St. Pete could support a Wally World. But, they'll have to play the game Russian style. It's harder for small companies to do well, but those with big fat wallets can pull it off. I hope they don't, though. It would make me cry.
