(Projection: like Ikea, they'll start, and possibly stop, with Moscow and St. Petersburg).[/quote]

Take a look at Ikea Groups website. Ikea may have started with Moscow and St. Petersburg but they certainly have not stopped with them. Wal-Mart could do very well.

Just only Moscow, at least 2 to 3 people are murdered every week because they are no white enough! Who would invest their money over there!

The mistake that Wal-Mart made in Germany was simple, they forgot that their German employees had far more rights than their American colleagues.
For instance they tried to forbid dating between colleagues if one of them held a position of influence in the company.
And a German court also ruled against the company's attempt to introduce a telephone hotline for employees to inform on their colleagues.
They are just a couple of instances of the regime that Wal-Mart tried to impose.
Will they succeed in Russia? well, 80% of Russian business pays protection money to the russian mafia.
Wal-Mart have to realise that they won't be dealing with US workers here.

There is no longer a mafia... That's an out-dated comment. Not to sound rude, but those type of comments really bug me.

I think it could do really well, though there are already big hyper-markets that have popped up that are successful. In Krasnoyarsk, which is where we are from, we already do have a really nice hypermarket that is close to being a Walmart, though Walmart does offer a tiny bit more variety, but when companies open abroad they tend to cater to the local population and what they would need and buy, so that would depend. Russia is still picking itself up and it's nothing like it was even three years ago. Constantly growing and improving.

I'm an expat in Dubai and I really wish we'd have a Walmart here. I cannot stand Carrefour!

We also have a supermarket chain called "Audi" that are slowly making their way around the country. I think they originated in Germany? (please correct me if I am wrong) Is this company in America?
With Wesfarmers buying Coles Group for a massive amount of money recently, They now monoplise the Australian retaill market even more. Not bad for a company that started off selling agricultural merchandise.

I haven't seen Aldi here in West Oz?

LOL... are you serious? Have you lived in Russia?? I am an American who had my own business in southern Russia for two years. The Mafia is very much alive and well there. I did not have any problem with any of them, but I did meet several. Their are bribes, killings, etc., BUT... they are pretty good to "out of towners" doing business or traveling there. I think that killing those from out of state is more serious than whacking a fellow Russian! They dont wanna make waves!

On that note, the McDonalds there does fantastic!! And.... Russia was/is a very decent place to live IF you are open minded and can handle lines, rude workers in all types of business etc.

I miss it!
