I have seen Tokyo and Osaka and I prefer Tokyo.
Shanghai... oh yes, I'm curious to see it one day and..maybe it's the best!

Shanghai.
1. I'm more interested in Chinese culture than Japanese.
2. Tokyo may be more of a global city now, but Shanghai (and China) is the future.
3. Chinese food is way better than Japanese! (haha only my opinion)
4. It's way cheaper
Would still love to visit Tokyo though.

Osaka beats Tokyo - not sure about Shanghai
Osaka beats Tokyo, in my opinion. Osaka is a great hub from which you can get to Kyoto and Nara in less than an hour. Osakans are more laid back too and the subway is nowhere near as crowded.

Never afforded a trip to any of these places. From google maps, Tokyo looks super clean.

I would pick Tokyo first, but it is a very expensive city. Hence, my relatives there live in the suburbs. It's still a fun place to be in. I would then have Osaka second. Sure, the place lacks a Disney Land, but I can eat takayoki any day I want if I live there. And, I would never step one foot in Shanghai. I wouldn't feel too comfortable in a state-run country.

You should try and visit the place sometime. I'm only here for the summer and besides the heat it is an incredible place. Seriously, Shanghai is one of the most exciting places in the world to be right now.
I even have libertarian tendencies and the whole state-run thing doesn't bother me so much. China has to be the most capitalist communist country.
That said, for me I wouldn't want to live in either of the 3 places long term. If I knew the language it might be different but I am quite happy with living here short term for now.
