20 years is not the shortest time
As mentioned, in Rio kidnapping is a sport
It likely wont go back to Europe after the 2012 games in London.
Also likely not to go back to east Asia after Beijing.
That leaves Chicago and Rio.
Chicago will win it. The crime and infrastucture of Rio is a big negative.

That's not true about Europe....2004 Athens than 2012 London...I'm sorry but that's wrong. During the 2012 race Paris was the strong contender but lost to London. The IOC doesn't even look at which continent hosted what. They look at the best city to represent the Games!!!!
Tokyo has the strongest chance b/c it hosted the summer Olympics in 1964. The IOC looks at that experience very favorably! So having the games in Asia 8 years after isn't a far fetch idea! Rio may have hosted the Pan Am games in 2007, and is a very strong contender to the Bid. But when the cards lay down, Tokyo will walk away victorious.
It was 12 years between the LA and Atlanta games!

I don't believe that there have been back to back cities that are on the same continent or very close to each other recently at least for the summer games.
Even 8 years is not that common.

Seems like the cost to host the Olympics keeps going up and up.
Wonder if at one point if the expenses will not be worth it?
Could that happen in 2016?

Although the IOC will be making its decision for 2016 next year in 2009, I think they will be keeping a keen eye on the lead-up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup of Soccer in South Africa.
International organizations such as FIFA and the IOC are increasingly sensitive to the fact that certain areas of the world (e.g., Africa for the World Cup, South America and Africa for the Olympics) have historically been excluded from the “big shows”.
As FIFA’s decision to go to South Africa shows, given the right circumstances, these organizations might sometimes be willing to take a “leap of faith”. South Africa, like Rio de Janeiro, has a significant crime problem (perhaps a more severe one, actually), yet FIFA still gave them the 2010 World Cup.
On the other hand, Brazil’s Olympic bid might be hampered by the fact that the country is already hosting the World Cup in 2014.

Definately not Chicago. The summer games were just in Atlanta in 96 and Salt lake had the 02 winter games. The world doesn't revolve around the United States. I can't see Rio either because the World cup will probobly be taking place there in 2014.

That's true about how the Olympics doesn't revolve around the US. But it wouldn't be far fetched. LA was in 1984 and ATL was in 1996, twelve years difference. And unfortunately Chicago will not win the Bid for 2016, too weak. I think a good time for the US to bid is 2020. They won't go for 2024 b/c Paris is running. It would be their 100th Anni., and they'll do anything to get that bid! And there are only two cities in the US that can hold such an event by 2020.

I would like to see the 2016 Olympics go to Rio de Janeiro. The Olympics have never been held in South America before, and Rio is a far more scenic city than Chicago. It is not a long flight from the mainland USA to Rio.
