BBC NEWS | UK | Education | Black girls overtake white boys
This kind of reminds me that whites thought that black people would never be good at sports, which most people think is loco now. My only question is why so many black American kids do so badly in school? I think it’s due to the fact that while the poorest of them are well-off by international standards, they have grown up in a society that doesn't value them. That's a disadvantage that kids from black countries do not have.
I also know many black Americans who are very smart, accomplished and well-educated and white Americans who are very dumb, not to mention Asian gangstas and Indian people who can't develop software. But I guess people like stereotypes, because they require less critical thinking.
All normally developed children are bright no matter WHAT color their skin is. That's a fact. Period. They have an enormous capacity for learning. They love to learn and explore, they can even learn new languages, how to play instruments and master complex mathematical concepts more easily than adults IMO. I think all children just need encouragement, discipline and love.

Yes i heard the stats about african and carribean students in England. You are right. You are also right when you area minority in country wherelike the u.s. with our history.A black or hispanic life even today is not treasured. That said it is an amazing feat that the majority of us blacks are succeding and living the American dream. It is the DRIVE that American people have in general that makes the poor blacks and poor whites be able to change there status in life. You may start off poor or un educated but if you have drive you can make money in this country. Its about confidence and a bit of arrogance to be honest.Thats why Americans come off as brash when traveling. You are always having to sell yourself here.

You're right about the opportunities in America. I think some of the blacks here are just depressed and feel badly about themselves, so some of them don't want to try. I think that sucks. But really, my family has had the chance to live the American dream. House, car, education etc. You are so right that's the difference in America.
In my country people who are rich and connected will always be at the top no matter how stupid or unqualified they are. I guess the US is the same-no offense Bushy you know I love you But here there are so many more jobs etc. that it doesn't matter because you can work hard and get a very good job, a nice house and social status.
But to tell the truth, I didn't have a choice in coming to the US. Am I better off here? Financially, probably yes. But I don't own my property, I have mortgages. My family back home some of them live in small houses, but they own those houses. They also get to relax. My mom says living in America you don't get to relax. I guess I can't tell the difference.

I grew up in a small town where people value hard work still. This is one thing that blacks in the city i feel are losing out because of social welfare programs make it easier for those who do not want to work hard. This is the problem in many European countries as well that contribute to a lack of being competitive .It rural areas you either work or people will look down on you even if you are not making lot of money, just as long as you are working. Why work hard whe the standard of living is as good if you don't work? The downside of overacheiving is we become detached from each other in our relationship with friends and family in favor of too much thing centered around material possesions.I diminishes our quality of life IF YOU LET IT.

This whole thing about education and success among American blacks is a complicated issue. First off is substandard housing of the very poor, especially in cities. Many of these substandard homes are loaded with lead paint walls which can result in lead poisoning. At home, school, and church they are constantly reminded they come from slavery and that the "white man" is always keeping them down. Some use this as a motivation to improve themselves but many come to expect that they'll never amount to anything because the white man will always keep them down. Current culture holds rappers and professional sports stars to a higher regard than those who hold positions that require years of study in school and universities. In fact, among many black youth today, if a young black man studies hard, gets good grades, speaks clearly and without slang, he is accused of "acting white" which is considered a vile insult.

Paris is a nightmare unless one has lots of money, and even then you can still walk in dog's crap.
I just don't get it how Americans, who have a higher standard of living, can stand to live there.
It just blows my mind.
By the way ....I've been living here since half a century, so I don't beg you to believe what I say....maybe I'm too stupid to enjoy what Paris has to offer, after all!

It is exactly like living in New York or London, it expensive, crappy, gritty... It is called big city life.
