Default Mexican Restaurant in Denmark

La Casita MexiCantina
Authentic Mexican Restaurant in Danmark

This restaurant is in Silkeborg, Danmark. It's the most authentic Mexican restaurant I've ever seen in Europe. The food was fantastic. I found the atmosphere to be authentic as well. When I go to a reataurant, I want a certain ambiance to escape from the normal routine, not just good food. I can make good food at home.

There was a Jazz Festival last year arounf the end of June 2007. We just by chance stumbled onto this place by accident. I was so impressed that I had to go back into the kitchen and meet the owner. She is Danish and lived in San antonio, Texas for a number of years. That explained her understanding of creating the perfect, and i mean perfect Mexican cuisine. It's more than that though. Atmosphere. The place is authentically decorated the way you'd see most restaurants in Mexico or the southwestern United States. I've put the website below to help give an idea and directions. If there are any Europeans who've never really had or experienced Mexican food or things southwestern, then this is the place.

Silkeborg is cool also. The countryside is also different compared to most of Danmark which is agricultural rolling hill open country with grain fields. There are more forests here than most places. In the nieghborhood where this place is located, there are many other things to see and do by just walking around. Below is their website and also a menu of what they offer.

Hehe. I've thought about becoming a nurse, landing a job in Europe, and then opening a Mexican restaurant.

LOL yeah, I hear you can buy Tortillas in Cans(like caned soup...) over there... I had someone from Mexico I knew live there for a few year in Switzerland...
I laugh at that...
Mexican is becoming a more and more famous cuisine, but in the process it will be butchered like Chinese and Italian... Authenticity will only be available in Mexico and Mexican enclaves.

What amazes me is that the grocery stores here are loaded with a Tex-Mex section or isle for Mexican food products. Two brands only. Santa Maria Tex-Mex brands and Olde El Paso. You'd think such a restaurant would go over big time here in Sweden. The closest thing I've found is a little taco stand in Göteborg, Sweden called "La Taqueria" run by a man and his wife at Kungstorget, Göteborg. Here's a young woman who has moved to Sweden from New York last year and makes mention of this little street vendor in the square outside of the Saluhallen Market Square.

Sooki flyttar till Göteborg, Sverige: La Taqueria

I've read where this husband and wife work 7 days a week, 12 hour days. Such is the price for business here. They have to buy their corn tortillas from a company in Spain. There are no good tortillas to be found here except the dry corn Taco shell products or the flour tortillas. But I heard they wanted to open up a permanent location by having their own restaurant. I'll encourage them to make the trip to Silkeborg to get some ideas before they try to open permanently somewhere. Atmosphere is everything.

Just a bit of an update. Here are the two website links lataqueria.se or flavorsofmexico.se
The food is very popular and it's the only place in all of Sweden that I now know of to buy Corn Tortillas to take home. Looks like they may be getting their more permanent location in about a years time.

Cheers,

It's interesting that Mexican food is different everywhere. Different throughout Mexico certainly , but also Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and certainly California. Maybe we should call it Southwestern style Cooking.

Over here the Tex-Mex brands of food found in the stores are far from authentic. However with the right ingredients and creativity , you can make major improvements on the Santa Maria Tex-Mex and Olde El Paso brands sold here in Sweden.

Lesson number one: Coriander = Cilantro. And the best Cilantro comes from most of the Immigrant stores and it's fresh.

Not planning on being in Denmark any time soon but who knows. I've stored the details as I am always on the hunt for good Mexican food in Europe but more so in London. I go to Cafe Pacifico in Covent Garden that does good enough Mexican food but I've had much better. My kitchen at home turns out better Mexican food than what I've had at some restaurants in the UK.

I know people from Denmark and people from Norway and when they came to Cali they refused to try Mexican food (or California style Mexican food...but anyway...) because they were scared of it being too hot & spicy. My friend was a bit insulted when they wouldn't try her homemade salsa....I couldn't believe they wouldn't even taste it.
I thought it was hilarious they were scared though. Turns out they only like incredibly bland food. Maybe that's why there's not many Mexican restaurants in Scandinavian countries; people wouldn't be into it.
Oh, and on a side note, my favorite south west food is in New Mexico...mmmm...I wasn't so impressed with Tex Mex. And Mexican food has already been watered down horribly in the US...ever hear of Taco Bell?
