xxs78, the crime in the USA is WAY overstated in the media (tv, movies, etc). My ex-boyfriend was from India, and he told me that he was terrified at first to come to the USA, because he thought all Americans ran around with guns shooting each other. After he'd been here a couple of weeks, he felt foolish for having thought that. Don't think it's like Law & Order, where they have 3 rapes and 4 murders every episode.

My Apologies...I realize this thread is intended for non-Americans but I feel I should comment on the perception that firearms ownership is a cause of violent crime. The gangs get their weapons illegally many are stolen from armories and many more yet are smuggled in to them across the Mexican border. The presence of Russian AK's French FAMAS Isralei UZIS Austrian Steyers and such in the hands of gangs is a direct result of disregard for law. I personally own MANY guns and I have NEVER commited any crimes with them nor do any other LEGAL and HONEST American citizens who own weapons for various reasons. Top on the list is our duty to be ready to defend our country. We do not walk the streets overtly carrying sidearms and we don't have shootouts at high noon. We do however have the right and obligation to defend our homes and families from the gangs who are FAR better armed than the average citizen but , thankfully, can't shoot straight and usually end up losing badly when honest folks decide to put them in their place. We aren't a nation of lunatics looking for an excuse to grab a weapon and go on a shooting spree. But a great many of us do feel that if the bad guys are going to be armed in defiance of law we do have the right to defend ourselves with more than a telephone call to 911. That doesn't mean that we are actively hunting a confrontation but we are ready if one comes hunting us. And an invasion of our country by a foriegn power would be greatly hampered by a populace armed and ready to defend. Our right to arms is a treasured thing...the criminal element here works outside of the intention of the Second Ammendment and using their use of firearms as an example of everyday Americans exercising their right to arms is , at best, misguided.

Moderator's Note:
xxs78's English seems to have deteriorated considerably at the start of this thread.
Let's all hope he/she can bounce back to the idiomatic style seen in their other posts lest the mods start to think there's a little trolling going on.

The gang violence is gang on gang & not usually random killings of just anyone...so the average American does not fear gang violence & is not affected by it.
I personally do not know one person who carries a gun, and I've even been to Texas . I only know of one person who owns guns & they are all for hunting.
It should also be noted that not having health insurance does not mean a person is in poverty. My family does not have health insurance & are considered lower middle class by their income & lifestyle. Health insurance is just soooo expensive (and crappy) that even some middle class people cannot afford it. For some people who are generally healthy, it can be cheaper to just pay for doctor visits themselves.
I wouldn't say we are bad cooks; there's a great diversity in food here from the great diversity of people who've come here from all over the world. Fresh healthy food is very trendy among people with more money.
I think the obesity issue has more to do with the convenience & cheap prices of poor quality food (not absence of good food), stressful & sedentary lifestyles, genetics, & ingrained bad habits, to name a few reasons. In short, it's a complex issue.
I don't think your viewpoints are too far off though, just exaggerated a bit.
