There is a gypsy family in the city i live and they are known in the City for stealing.
I think they also run one of those places that buys metal/scrap & cans.
I know some people from Eastern Europe who use the term gypsy as a..
Insult.People in Italy,UK and other countries are hostile to them because many..
Steal,Beg and set up temporary RV parks. Many dont have this lifestyle but the..
Perception is there.

Roma people are a pretty stigmatized group in the Czech Republic. Most of them are uneducated and living on welfare. Czech juvenile halls are full of Gypsy kids.
Sheypete, you do look like a Gypsy, and sad to say it, if you're riding a metro train, a lot of people may consider you a potential pickpocket. (Czech Gypsies are routinely stereotyped as pickpockets.)
I'm not going to elaborate on whether it is "their" (the Gypsies) or "our" (the white Czech population) fault - anyway, I believe both parties are to blame - but the fact is this minority is heavily ostracized in the Czech Republic and life prospects of a typical Czech Gypsy kid are very low: many of them are abandoned by their parents and end up in orphanages (white Czechs are not eager to foster Gypsy children). Many of them have a terrible family background and end up in a juvenile hall. I've recently seen some shots from a juvenile detention center on a Czech TV channel, and ALL of the kids they were showing were Gypsies. A ridiculous number (about 60% I believe) of Gypsy children goes to special needs schools. Not because they're slow, it's because that due to their family background, they lack most of the social habits that schools expect from 6 year old kids.
Only a handful of them makes it to have an average, middle class life. And even these people still face many prejudices.
Sheypete, good luck in the Czech Republic! You can see some strange gazes, but there are no anti-Indian or anti-Syrian prejudices among the Czechs that are worth making friends with. Not all, but a lot of girls like "exotic" faces.

This question has puzzled me for quite sometime now because even when it comes to interracial marriages, the white and black combination seems to dominate any other combination (white and chinese or white and indian). How come?
I will take a stab at explaining this. I lived in Eastern Europe for almost a decade, so I am basing this on my experiences and I'm not saying that this is "the" reason - just what I observed myself.

African men were never before seen in the area until they started to attend the universities. They are like a novelty - I saw women who were targeting blacks no matter what - just because they were black. They wanted to have mixed babies as a way of feeling "special" compared to the other moms and their babies who were "boring" and "just like all the rest". Western media helped to sensationalize biracial folks. And since the African men wanted to stay in their host country instead of returning home, it was a win-win situation for them to marry a local girl. Many of the Africans in Hungary, for instance, attended the medical universities, partnered up with a local and started a practice and a family far away from home.

OTOH, Roma, or someone who just looks Roma, is nothing new to the local girls. It doesn't matter how exotic your heritage is, to them they have seen that look in the area for over 1000 years. There is no novelty, and actually there is a lot of stigma still attached to being Roma.

It doesn't sound fair, but no one said life was fair. I have heard that nationalist sentiment is stronger now than before the fall of socialism in Eastern Europe - maybe you should consider finding a more diversity-accepting part of Europe to plant your roots, so to speak. Either that, or look for a partner from somewhere else and have her join you - it won't stop people from staring, but at least you'll have someone with whom you can share a laugh about it.

There are many inter-racial marriages in the Czech Republic, there are many foreigners of various origins that don't face any problems with racism. I'm not sure which post-1989 development you are talking about - at least in the Czech Republic, xenophobia and intolerance are considered a bad inheritance of the Communist rule among younger generation, and for most of young people it's "cool" to be open and have foreign-looking friends. Yes, there are exceptions, just like everywhere.
You are right with the rest of your post but please stop implying that Czechs are a bigot, racist nation; it's not the case with younger generation, especially not in big cities like Prague. And it's getting better and better.

I was offering the OP an opinion. I don't recall asking for your opinion of my post.

You are just making the case for the OP on the sort of frenzy Eastern Europeans can whip themselves into. I didn't even say anything specific to the Czechs so please back off.

I love how people who try to attack me on CD always talk about what I'm "implying" - maybe it would help if you stopped trying to interpret my words to fit your self-victimization. As in - if the shoe DOESN'T fit, then DON'T wear it.

If you're talking BS, expect people to reply.

The OP said he had moved to Prague. You "advised" him to move away.

You look like the son of somebody who owns a jewelry store next to where a cruise ship docks. I have a friend from Barbados who is Indian and owns a jewelry store there, among many other businesses. Throughout the Caribbean, the small Indian and Chinese minorities on the islands own most of the 'connected' businesses.

Good song to listen to in the morning...

My opinion = B.S.

Gee thanks, I learn something every day. Keep the insults rolling!

I am guessing your opinion is the right one, correct?

I didn't tell him to leave Prague, I suggested that he find a part of Europe where there is more acceptance of diversity.

Don't bother to fluff me with further insults and mischaracterizations of my words - you obviously have something personally invested in the matters that relate to the subject of this thread.

Go Prague! Best place in this world for someone who looks ethnic! Happy now?

Maybe you should change your nick to "DontH8Me because I'm dum... " O.K., no more insults.
You have stated no arguments to support your perception of the Czech Republic as an intolerant country, other than that you lived somewhere in "Eastern" Europe for several years, and that you've "heard" of the Eastern European nationalisms getting worse. Totally convincing indeed.
Basically, you're saying "regardless of how flawed my opinion is, it's still a mere opinion so don't attack me." Fair enough, but is this opinion any credible then?

Imagine someone saying "I lived in Texas for some time and I've heard that all people in California either look like Ken and Barbie or they're gang members. Am I talking nonsense? Oh, back off and stop insulting me, I'm free to spread my opinions."
