We already know that Americans are paying attention. The questions was directed at people that live abroad- in other countries- get it? My family in Ireland all pay attention (their entire economy is very dependent on how well America does and Ireland is now in a recession).

Unfortunately all though Americans are paying attention, there are many who are totally apathetic

I just moved back to America from Europe so I do have some knowledge on the interest level. My family likes to talk about the election when I'm talking to them on the phone. The politics in America affect their lives greatly.

That's good to hear. Europeans and others should get over this obsession with America.

I pay attention, Ive followed it really closely this yr. After all, whatever happens in USA affects most of the world at some stage, and being as I want to live there one day, it's important to follow the elections etc.

I watch news and current event programs from Canada and Scandinavia on Podcast, and often the stories -- even top stories -- are about political races or issues in the U.S.

A part from some isolated cases I don´t think people follow the Presidential election in the US because they are obsessed with America.
We are genuinely concerned about the election outcome because inevitably it will have consequences around the world and some of them will affect us deeply.
Want it or not the US is a major political and economical power and what happens on the 4th of November will have serious consequences not just on the lives of the American people but on the lives of many other human beings around the world. I don´t think many Americans are aware of it or perhaps they don´t care.
Take the current financial crisis. The whole world is shaking as a consequence of what started in the US.
The wars started by the US have not only caused many unnecessary death (including those of many American soldiers) but has also strengthen the hate of some for the whole western world. So now we (American, European, Australian, etc..) are at risk of suffering many more terrorist attacks and our daily lives our affected by it.
These are just a couple of examples and I can bring you many more.
So there, it is not a just a simple question of obsession.
