The Americas in general have probably another 1,000 years to go before they approach European standards, including 3,000 year-old Lisbon, if ever, in terms of livable urban environment (though Latin American women beat European women hands down anytime!

).
At least the ruling classes in Santo Domingo have given the people something of common modern value, a railway transit system.
I believe the oldest city in the US is Saint Augustine, but in sharp contrast to Santo Domingo, it has in a way been frozen in time as the centers of economy and power in Florida have shifted elsewhere over the centuries.
