I had an old boyfriend that lived on Robinson Road, (wonder is he still there) showed me all of Hong Kong, I found it to be a country in which you were either filthy rich or poor. The place was wonderful, however it is very clicky amongst the rich - lots of the kids were Harvard and Oxford educated with Rolls Royces at their disposal. I found myself as a foreigner in that circle not always welcome by the older generation (even though I was college educated). Might have been different if I was royalty or had any title behind me.
It is perfectly acceptable for a man to have a mistress and for the wife to know about it and if your married to a man you can expect him to be out eating with his business partners nightly. In fact, everyone eats out all the time - the restaurtants are fabulous. If you wish to remain with the elite out there and perhaps plan to marry expect to have a interpol check done on you - no exageration. I opted out and left my partner for a more normal life- the Royal Hong Kong yacht club, many many race meetings and fabulous functions, dinners etc I attended became in the end to much for me to handle - The matriarch of the family handed us an itinerary of all the functions that we were were expected to attend during the holidays this also became a little to much for me to abide by. However you did have a driver and rolls to take you to them.
During the take over of Hong Kong by the chinese, many people in Hong Kong moved their money out of Hong Kong and got second passports in other countries to do so, Canada opened its door to alot of the rich. Also if you lookng at Vancouver you can see why many chinese moved there it reminds me a little of Hong Kong. Many chinese set up businesses in other countries to do this - smart move by some countries to allow this and benefit from thse investments in their country.
Having said that I would visit again in a heartbeat the people and culture were delightful.
