What is singapore Like? (best city, crime, houses)

Hi every one.I am an American Male considering going to singapore.I would also would like to learn the culture.

What are the people like?
Is the health and food regulations sector up to US standards?
Is it a clean enviorment?
Is singapore a place where americans can study?
Is it true that their economy is growing?

All advice will be greatly apreciated.Thank you!

i am not exactly what the people are like but i will tell you that their health and food regulations are stricter their. their Environment is for the most part clean. as far as studying there as a american i am not sure. their economy is slowing down like everyone else's economy is but it is growing at a slow pace.

i watched a traveling commercial about singa long time ago
"You cant finish singa in three days."
so I guess you can spend 4 days at most.

My uncle used to work there as a doc.
so that's what he told me:
1.very clean, very small, basically it is a city
2. you dont understand their english
3. asian, but darker skin

Singapore is like Disney World. If Disney World were run by Hitler.

Extremely clean and polite.
Chewing gum in public or smoking indoors is not allowed.
I don't know if they still do this, but any man with long hair would not be allowed thro immigration at the airport and be sent back home.
Over 50% of the population used to be under the age of 20 - not sure if that statistic is still accurate.
Property is unbelievably expensive.
The temperature and humidity rarely drop below about 88º and 99%. The island is about 18 miles from the equator after all. And they are subject to monsoon season and typhoons.
Having spent time there, it seems the younger the person the better the English. Some of them sound like they just graduated Harvard.
Just today I saw an article online about the financial industry in Singapore taking a big hit which I'm sure will have a knock-on effect on other business.

Having said all that, it is and can be a wonderful place and I'm not just saying that cause I was born there

Singapore is like hong kong as it is a modern city with lots of chinese people

there are others as well

they speak english

It is a strict country though

Spent a week their last month.
Found Singapore suprisingly multicultural, indians, chinesse, and malays with a sprinkle of westerners.
Its very modern and clean, laws are very strict.
Easy to get around.
Has magnificient food courts.
And the most beautiful colour coordinated town houses you will ever see!
However gets pretty boring after 3 days, remember its just an island with a crowded city on it.
It is however very close to Thiland, Malaysia (you just have to drive over a bidge to get their) and Indonesia. Even places like Australia (Darwin) and india can be reached in under 4 hours for around $150, so loads of travel opportunity for you.
The economy is predomatley services and banking based, it has grown a lot over the last few decades, but is feeling the pinch now i am sure
I have being told housing is very expensive and finding a place to live could be difficult.

My father lives and works there and I often visit him.
People: The people there are incredibly nice and I can't emphasize this enough. When I went there, my father met me at Changi Airport and on the train, there were some teenagers who were insisting my father take their seat (he was standing like me). When we got off the train with our suitcases, we had a young lady ask us if we needed directions or help with our luggage. Singapore also has very little crime and a heavy police presence who have strict rules and are heavy-handed.
Food: Singapore is a wealthy and modern city-state with hygiene standards at least as high as any other place in the developed world.
Clean environment - Singapore is a business hub and relies on foreign investment and hence, it's image is incredibly important. As a result, Singapore is an incredibly clean city - one of the cleanest in the world. One of the reasons for this is its strict laws regarding things like rubbish.
Studying in Singapore - Singapore has a high standard of education because it must rely on industries such as oil refining, biotechnology, knowledge economy and financial services due to it being a city-state with no natural resources. Singapore's National University doesn't have the reputation of the Ivy League of the US, but I think it is in the top 50 universities in the world.
The economy - Singapore, like any other country, isn't impervious to financial troubles and unfortunately doesn't have its own natural resources to rely on in difficult times, but it has a very efficient government whom are business-orientated.

I should also point out that if you're interested in traveling Asia, Singapore is an excellent base point.

Now to the downsides of Singapore.
-Like I said about its crime - it's low because it has very strict, draconian laws and a strong police presence. The penalties are nasty and inhumane in some circumstances (you can be hung for carrying a certain quantity of drugs or whipped for bad enough vandalizing). People and human rights groups often cite this as a problem (though I've never had a problem with it personally because I don't exactly go around committing crimes).
-It's government limits your freedoms quite substantially. If you want to see violent movies, pornography (:P) or get drunk on a friday or saturday night, you can forget it.
-my biggest complaint - the weather. It is always warm and humid. Always.
-to be honest, there really isn't much to do there. The television there is awful, they have Santosa Island with its beach and gardens which are crowded and very artificial, and the main thing to do in Singapore is shopping.
