I think mankind has been predicting the end of the world since well ... the dawn of mankind.
2012 is a unique year in many sense, if you want to look at astronomy, which was what the Mayans were referring to, there is a special alignment of the stars and planets, sort of like an odometer going from 99,999 to 00,000. This does not mean you have to trade your car in, it just means the car is getting older and as some would state, we are going into the "age of aquarius" where we will encounter many problems in regards to water - floods, storms, drought, etc.
2012 is also an important year as it's re-election year for the Obama reign. As today Israel pounds Hamas and troops are being diverted from that of Iraq to Afghanistan. And troops on the Pakistan and India border face each other. We see a build up of things to come. It symbolizes a realignment of world orders. Perhaps a very real "cold war" confrontation on a satellite front perhaps Pakistan or Iran sometime in 2012-2016.

I Think People are just over reacting like they did back when Y2K was supposed to happen. So no I dont believe that the world will end in 2012.

You have to remember back when these predictions were made, they may be able to see very small parts of the future, and even if that is possible, the rest is pretty much guessing. maybe in a trance like state a volcano is seen with people running, so of course it might look like the end of the world. Of course this is a very simple way of putting it....but a prediction is just a bunch of signs or puzzles put together which is usually very far from the actual truth. The actual end of the world could mean many other things than really meaning "the end of the world" If the world ended everytime it was predicted to, we would not be here right now.
