Default UK xenophobia

had no idea about the USA and Canada. Publicity would put one under a different impression. For a country that survives almost completely on imports, I am continually surprised at the UK's xenophobia. It is also continually stoked by the press and the government who blame any sort of public sector failure or any systematic failure on 'uncontrolled immigration' instead of taking responsibility. Most citizens are quite unaware of how easy it isnt' to get into the UK. In the case of the UK i think they may also have forgotten their bloodthirsty history.

Try Burma for true xenophobia.

Thats HECTIC! Am amazed they even bother having a tourism industry then! Delicate question, but isn't France also well known for its xenophobia?
As a non-EU citizen living here, i'm quite amazed at how normal and accepted xenophobia is all over europe.

France used to be very Xenophobic like most European countries but though there is still a lot of racism, there is definitely more integration and racially mixed couples are not only way more common but also not considered to odd any more.

I hate xenophobia and racism I find it stupid.

Most of it comes from ignorance and fear. what you have to realise is that until the 60s/70s most European countries were mostly comprised of "white natives" and hence being of a different colour or nationality marked you out immediately. There was no knowledge of other cultures, religions etc... among the general population.

Nowadays of course we all live in a much more multi-cultural society apart from very rural areas .

I am ashamed to say the extreme right wing always seem to do quite well in France, they play on the fear of immigration and the "they will take our jobs" rubbish.

Also French people always seem to vote extreme right wing as a punishment to whoever is in power at the time and has let them down.

It does worry me that in this economic climate with so many job losses the uglier side of isolationism and jingoism will start to rear its ugly head in Europe again.

The most racist places I have been have been Russia and Eastern Europe by fat though.

France is on the whole pretty much the same as the UK or Germany.

Russia, Poland , Hungary, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, the Ukraine etc... are far, far worse by a long way. I have been quite shocked at the attitude of people towards people of another race/colour and let's not even start about Gay people...

I got the exact same treatment in London.

But lets not forget that is the minority. Not everyone in Scotland and England are as bad as you make it out to be.

Just paints a very bad image of my country when the majority of us are a friendly and welcoming bunch. You get idiots everywhere.

Whoa hold on, have you been here before? Our tourism industry is booming, but the minorities always give a bad impression. I can asure you we're not all like that. I have known many foreign people that have enjoyed visiting Scotland.

Wow, you've spent enough time in all those countries (and etc!) to make such broad statements? "Eastern" Europe is not homogenous; e.g. no one in his right mind will compare Czech Republic and, say, Poland on the majority population's attitude towards the LGTB people.
As for racism in CZE - yes it does exist, just like everywhere. At least we've got no openly-racist parties in the Parliament (unlike many Western European countries that traditionally consider themselves more tolerant and enlightened). I admit though people in here have prejudices against the Roma people, and especially older folks are reserved (reserved, not openly hateful) with the Vietnamese and Mongolians.

I love Scotland but Glasgow was truly not a place I would ever wish to live again. We spent 4 years trying to make friends and failed. We were told on different occasions " we have already all the friends we need" "

All the Scottish friends we have are either from the Highlands or Edinburgh.

I really did not get a good impression of Glaswegians. It was for those of us not blessed enough to hail from Glasgow one of the most unfriendly places I have ever been to.

It may have been a minority but one we encountered pretty much any time we went out. Stephen my fiance was told ( all very unofficially of course) at work there was no chance he would ever get a promotion because he wasn't Scottish.... They constantly picked on him for sounding posh ( he comes from Yorkshire so not exactly what people would consider the poshest part of the UK).

I adore Scotland ( so much that we were there at Christmas and are going back for our Spring holiday) and Stephen has even applied recently for a job in Edinburgh. But Glasgow ? Never again.

The Sassenach jokes wear thin really, really quickly.

And you are right each country has morons and jerks but for my money the two unfriendliest places I have ever been in the world would be Bordeaux and Glasgow. Paris just cannot hold a candle to those two despite having such a dreadful reputation. Vienna is really bad too and Boston not too far behind.

lo...yip...not only have i been here before, i have lived here for +- 3 years. (am married to an irishman who dragged me here by my hair just about)
you are right, not all brits are xenophobes but it is pretty hard to find you guys. where are you all hiding?
i'll be quite blunt and say i've never had issues when i've been outside of england but your govt also perpetuates it by blaming all their failures on immigrants. Those not educated in public sector responsibilities and such like can easily fall for their horse manure.
As for the tourism industry, I must be honest (not disparaging) and say I have experienced better. If you travel to the likes of Brazil, what you get for say £75 per nite is incomparable to what you get in the UK for the same rate.

I lived in Austria and Germany for a few years and used to go to the Czech Republic, Poland etc...all the time ( my Dad was a Diplomat) and every time I went especially with a black or Arab friend I was shocked at the attitude of people. I am not saying the Czech Republic is like Poland , I am saying that on the whole I have found many Eastern Europeans to have attitudes I find shocking.

In France the FN is a disgrace and I have no problem admitting it . But racism has definitely gone down a lot in the last two decades. You get high profile cases in inner cities and bad suburbs but the situation is definitely much better. Integration has definitely happened in many places though a lot still remains to be accomplished ( the rest of Europe is the same).

A black friend of mine spent 3 years in Warsaw and a year in Bratislava ( yes I know it is in Slovakia not the Czech Republic) and had the most awful time and his visits to other ex Eastern Block countries were pretty scary too.

To be fair in "Western" Europe Austria and Switzerland both also have terribly racist populations ( I lived there so I do know) .

It is not a personal attack by the way just an observation from my personal and friend's experiences. We might have just been terribly unlucky for all I know.
