You can start your search by checking out vkontakte.ru, odnoklassniki.ru and other facebook-like russian social networks

I suggest something a bit simpler. Try the phone book! This one's even in English.

Russians do not want to be found. Useful comprehensive databases do not exist. Looking for a needle in a haystack would have a better probability of success.

Trust me try the consulate in the US.I have dealt with many and SOMETIMES you can get lucky or they can point you in the right direction. I have dealt with the consulates of Ukraine,England, and Romania(the best). GOOD LUCK

Yes, I find everyone of my old friends are on there (vkontakte.ru, it's Russian Facebook) - though most likely you will have to type in their Cyrillic names. Do you remember them?
