Default France or Italy

Assuming you've not been to either, which would you visit and why?

I would say Italy - more classical culture, just more romantic, imo...Both are beautiful and have lots of culture though.

It's mathematical. First, generally speaking, classical culture refers to the period from roughly 500 BC to 500 AD. Italy was at the heart of classical culture for most of that period. Generally speaking, it is fair to say that only Meditteranean France directly participated in that culture; a rough statement, but there are ways to define and qualify it so that it stands.

In any case, Paris did not start to become an important city until about 800 AD, while Rome has its beginnings in around 800 BC, a one thousand six hundred year difference, and the artistic and archaeological wealth of Rome alone, not to mention most of the rest of Italy, shows it. Most of the classical archaeology in today's France is in around Arles and Lyon, important capitals of Roman Gaul at the time. Going back even further, today's Marseilles was the location of Greek and even before that possibly Phoenician colonies.

Damage Control Freak will become famous soon enoughDamage Control Freak will become famous soon enough
Italy has the advantage that you can visit several nice, world famous cities which are relatively close to each other so you can do a nice n quick round trip within a few days. In France you'd see Paris and then you'd have to travel like 300 miles to some other place and then again 300+ to the next one. If you have time enough though, you can see the Atlantic shore, Paris and the Mediterrean etc., all within France and all very different.
