Default Customs duties in Ghana

I sent a package containing electronics, clothing and toys with a value of approximately $200 US. Can you tell me how customs officials figure the duties on a package like that? The friend I sent it to said they are asking her to pay $185 US to pick it up!

I hate to ask this question and I'm sure I'll get flamed for it, but are you sure it's strictly customs duties? The reason I'm concerned is that I've sent items overseas before to certain countries and the "customs duty" was nothing of the sort. Either way, she may well have to pay the amount (unless it can be haggled down) to get her package.

Well, if that is the case, I am asking her to refuse the package and have them send it back to sender. I paid for return postage when I sent it so I'd rather get it back and deal with it from here. Is there anyone out there who can tell me how to calculate whatever the charges they are assessing? $185 is a rediculous amount for a $200 package. Is it based on declared value? how do they come up with a figure? Please, someone out there must know!?!?

If you DID NOT use the USPS, your best bet would be to ask the shipping company that you used, they should have a broker in Ghana that can explain how the duty was calculated. If you used USPS.. then out of luck as they won't.
