We are taking the train from Paris to Angouleme, and from there we are renting a car and will be spending a night or to on Ile de Re and/or La Rochelle.

Thanks for the great photos of exceptional Loire Valley castles. I have spent a total of 4 weeks in the region, staying in Orleans, Tours, and in a village close to Amboise. The scenery along the river is great and many places have hardly any tourists. From the SNCF in Tours and Amboise I rented a bicycle for several days to ride the small country roads. Pedaled thru quiet villages, past fields of sunflowers, and woods.

What is Il de Re?
I was in La Rochelle on Bastille Day. It rained without interruption all day.

Ile de Re ... small island just off La Rochelle. Very flat and sandy. Excellent for biking and for sea food. Main town is St. Martin de Re which is where prisoners embarked for Devils Island. Quite interesting to visit.
Weather is very changeable which you would expect from he Atlantic Coast.

Yup.
This past week we had almost 3 solid days of rain here on Amelia Island.
We actually needed the moisture, though it would have been nice to have the showers a bit more spread out.
If it rains on us in France, so be it. It will be a good excuse to snuggle in a café for a few hours--or drag my husband to a museum.
